The next morning, this little guy was smiling at Mama.
He also gave her a sneaky look. So cute.
Watch us grow!

We arrived at the California Academy of Sciences by 9:45 am (15 mins after it opened) and it was super empty. It was nice to have so much room to roam and Janie could see all the fish without squishing in between people. The first few minutes were in the stroller so she could finish her oatmeal. We usually have to park the stroller off the side but today we had plenty of room for her to ride in it.
The first thing she wanted to see were the harlequin shrimp in the “small small tank” (in her words).
She also asked me to take a picture of them.
One of her favorite things to see are the scuba divers cleaning the tank. She can’t help waving to them.
For once, the tunnel was unoccupied so she enjoyed running in and out of the tunnel.
We’ve never seen this room so empty before. She got the whole tank to herself for a bit.
Our little fish explorer used the card to identify a few of the fish.
“There’s Dory!”
She was fascinated with the upside-down jellyfish today.
We also saw the rays and sharks and caught the tail end of the penguin feeding.
This kid had a great time and we finished seeing everything by 10:45.
Hooray!!
After we drove home from the aquarium, we had just enough time to take a potty break and regroup.
We had a lunch date with Daddy in between his meetings and Janie was excited to see him.
On our way home, Janie had dropped GG on the sidewalk. She hadn’t noticed until we were 15 minutes after we had already gotten home. When she noticed, we went back outside to retrace our steps and luckily found him around the corner on the sidewalk. Phew! That was close. He went straight into the washing machine when we got back to the house.
She also said, “I don’t want to take a nap” and then passed out minutes later (with GG’s doppleganger in hand). She had quite a day so far.
For Janie’s Birthday Even dinner, we went out to a nice dinner this evening with Auntie Jia and Uncle Jason. I think Daddy picked this Italian place because they have linguine with clams – one of Janie’s favorite things to eat. She was so excited when Mommy’s dish came and gobbled up all of the clams with the exception of the 3 that Mommy snuck when she wasn’t looking. She really kept an eye on Mommy and made sure that she didn’t eat any while she was working on the noodles.
By the end of the meal, she was a big greasy mess and her tummy was full of tasty clams.
She sounded and looked like a cooking show today while she played with her tea set. We don’t even have Food Network here at home! Where does she get this?!
You can also see a little bit of her mischievous side in this video. She knows she’s not supposed to play with her milk but she does it anyway with a sneaky smile on her face.
Janie went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium for the first time today. Our first stop was the sea otter exhibit.
Next was the Splash Zone with lots of penguins, slides, riding toys, and a tunnel with fishies inside.
Later, we went to see the jellies and the new “tentacles” exhibit. The cuttlefish were her favorite.
Before lunch, we got a few good photos of Janie with the grandparents and the rest of the family.
This one cracks me up every time I see it.
We had lunch at Johnny Rockets and then it was time for a nap.
We all went back to the aquarium but Janie didn’t see any of it in the afternoon.
Janie went to Umami Burger for dinner tonight with Mommy and Daddy.
She got her very own grilled cheese and had a fun time waving to the baby behind her.
She has such as sneaky look in this photo.
This sums up a lot of what goes on between Janie and Daddy.
She has a stubborn and sneaky streak just like her dad. It’s often funny to watch (like in this situation) but also a bit frustrating at times…for both of them.
This afternoon, Janie went to the playground as usual and Mirian got a bunch of cute photos of her playing.
This is why our house is filled with sand each day.
It looks like Janie has started climbing.
Up, up, up she goes!
