Valentine’s Day at School

IMG_7550

There was a big celebration of Valentine’s Day at school today. The kids exchanged valentines (we gave DumDums and pencils) and the kids had a special presentation to the parents at the end of the day. Luckily Mama was home today so she was able to watch too.

All the kids had worked hard over the past two weeks practicing some love songs, making ukuleles, cutting out hearts, and making necklaces for each of their parents.

They all performed for us this afternoon, strumming their ukuleles and singing 4 songs.

Then they handed out their gifts for us. We didn’t even know Janie could cut out a heart already! What a nice job she did. The ukuleles also had rubberbands that made noise when you pluck them. Very clever.

Before we left school, all the kids decorated their own cookies and ate them (of course).

To celebrate what a good job she did, we took her to SuperDuper and she ate about 75% of this burger!

We took the train home after dinner and then Janie played her ukulele some more.

She also insisted that we both wear our leis this evening before bed and snapped a photo.

Pick-up and the Walk Home

IMG_0590

This afternoon, Mama picked up Janie from school and found her at the art table with her friends Radeet and Ami. One of her favorite things to do at school is cut paper into small pieces.

We tried to take the train home today but there was a long delay.  So, we took advantage of the nice weather and walked home along The Embarcardero.  It’s the beginning of Fleet Week here in SF so there was a big navy ship docked at Pier 32.

We stopped at the tables near the park for a popcorn snack and milk.

Cutting

IMG_9202

This afternoon, Mama picked Janie up from school and she was happily sitting at the craft table cutting strips of paper.

IMG_9203

Then we started cutting the strips into little pieces.  She would have stayed longer to cut up all the strips but then agreed to take them all home to finish.  The teacher was nice enough to make her a little envelope out of construction paper so that they would fit nicely in her backpack.

Turtle

IMG_7084

Janie asked to do some cutting and gluing so she made a turtle today.

This project involved cutting long strips of paper, then tearing them into smaller pieces, gluing them on the picture, and coloring in the head, feet, and tail.

Craft Project

This afternoon, Janie asked to do more cutting and gluing so I put together a craft project that I use a lot at work with my patients.  It involved cutting small pieces of paper, squeezing glue dots onto a picture, and then gluing the pieces of paper on the right parts of the picture.  I guess it’s called a mosaic.  Anyway, it’s a little tedious but for a beginner, it’s pretty entertaining.

Here is the final product and the proud artist was pretty happy about it.

Cut and Paste

IMG_6769

This afternoon, Janie worked on her cutting and she was able to cut on the straight lines that I drew!

After cutting out all the strips, she glued them all onto the paper on her own. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the mess that I thought it would make.

Cutting with Scissors

IMG_1587

Today is a very exciting day for this OT Mama.  At 32 months, Janie was introduced to scissors today and totally crushed it!  I taught her to place her middle finger in the second hole instead of the index finger because it gives her more control.  By the time she was done playing this evening, she was able to put the scissors on her fingers correctly about 75% of the time.  Not bad!   She also learned the right way to cut by pointing her thumb up.  Developmentally, kids want to pronate their forearms and cut with the thumb pointing down but it’s not very effective later when it comes time to cut lines and shapes.

Janie worked on snipping on the edge of the paper today and really enjoyed it.

Ama bought us a Crayola art set a few months ago and it had these scissors that I’ve been saving for the right time.  They’re actually pretty cool – plastic, doesn’t have sharp edges, but cuts construction paper really well!
