miserable morning

IMG_5512

Janie has had a cough for the past 3 weeks and it seems like it’s gotten worse since yesterday.  In fact, she threw up her whole dinner on Monday night after a coughing spell.  This morning, she woke up so uncomfortable and was coughing pretty hard.  I think she’s gotten a new cold on top of the old one.  Unfortunately, she still had to go to school and it was not a pretty morning.  After getting dressed, she just wanted to be held.  She also cried and said, “I don’t wanna walk!” and pleaded for me to carry her to car.  I knew I couldn’t carry her all the way down to the garage so I just started walking out the door and down the hall and she cried and followed me until we got to the car.

In the car, she continued to cry and didn’t want to eat her cereal.  She got really quiet on the way to school and then cried again when we got to school.  Poor thing was so miserable but I just had to leave her.  The teacher said she would call if she didn’t perk up.  I didn’t get a call all day and she was smiling by the time I picked her up after work so it looks like she snapped out of her funk.  She was still coughing pretty hard but she had eaten well all day and had lots of energy this evening.  I’m so relieved.  This is one of those tough decisions that I hate making and I’m glad she’s ok.

morning tears

IMG_4513

I don’t know why but Janie had quite a fit this morning before heading to school.  She was crying and kept saying “I want carry you!”  She wanted Mommy to carry her to the car.  It was so bad that we had to resort to putting her in the stroller just to get to the car.  Once she was in the car, she was fine.  Weirdo.

one more day with daddy

IMG_0871As a precaution, Janie stayed home from school one more day and Daddy was once again the babysitter.  She was feeling much better and loved having out on Daddy’s lap.  She even called Mommy at work on Facetime during lunch.

At nap time, she fought it with tears but then 30 seconds later, she passed out for a good 2.5 hours.

Aaaaahhh…

When Mommy got home, she was happy and back to her old self.  It looks like they spent all day at home in their pjs.  How nice.

Shopping for a Tree

IMG_1444

During lunch, Janie snoozed right through it and then woke up as we were paying the bill.  On the way home, we stopped at the tree lot to pick out a tree.

IMG_0650

There were so many little trees to choose from!

IMG_1449

This is the one we picked out and Janie was not in the mood to take a picture with it.

IMG_1452

Once Big GG climbed up onto the tree, she warmed up to the idea.

She finally agreed to take a picture with a tree.

We walked the tree home by using the stroller and Janie got to ride on Uncle Jason’s shoulders.

Missing Hawaii

This morning, Janie asked for a bucket.  As I was trying to find one, I realized this could be a recipe for trouble.  I asked her, “what is it for?” and she pointed to the giant potted plant.  She had started digging in the soil.  I told her “no digging” and then this is what happened next:

30-month visit

IMG_9086

Janie went to see the doctor today for her 30-month check-up.  What’s interesting is that she cried when it came time to weigh and measure her. She didn’t even let me take her shirt off.

IMG_9089

She made such a fuss that I didn’t have time to write down her stats.  I’m gonna have to call them tomorrow to get the numbers but I think this is what the nurse said:

Weight: 30 lbs, 4 oz.
Height: 35.25 inches

Luckily the crying didn’t last long and the books and toys in the exam room helped.  When the doctor came in, she was really quiet and a little worried.  To break the ice, she received a lollipop just like last time.  Everything checked out well but she refused to talk so the doctor wrote in her notes “reportedly talks”.  Haha.

IMG_9095

The last part was to get her flu shot and she didn’t even flinch this time.  She was more excited about the bandaid on her leg and the lollipop she had to finish.

First ED Visit

IMG_8330

Last night Janie went to sleep like normal but then suddenly woke up at 11 pm with a weird cough that sounded more like barking.  She was also having trouble breathing and was wheezing too.  At one point, she coughed so hard that she threw up.  We were worried about her breathing so we drove her to Mommy’s work to get her check out.

IMG_8303

Once we arrived, she was so mad because she just wanted to go back to sleep but was having trouble breathing.

IMG_8329

She cried as the triage nurse tried to take her vitals but she allowed her to put the pulse-ox on her toe and the blood pressure cuff on her leg.

IMG_8306

In the exam room, another nurse came in to examine her.  They said she had croup and started her on a cool mist that came out of a tube.

IMG_8309

We blew it in her face for a good hour and she started to sound better and perked up.  The resident also came in and looked at her ears and listened to her chest.  By then, she was much calmer and cooperative.

They left us in the room to have her monitored and to receive another medicine that would calm down the coughing some more.  She took it out of an oral syringe like a champ.

IMG_8319

As we waited some more, Janie became much more comfortable and played with the tube, watched a little tv, and was more herself.  The nurses and resident were really nice, checked on us regularly, and brought her juice and a stuffed star.  The attending took a while to come see us but he was thorough.

IMG_8326

Luckyily, croup is a viral infection that affects the upper airway more than the lungs.  It was described as an inflammation of her vocal cords, which causes the barking cough.  She also had no runny nose and no fever, which we are happy about.  At 3am, she was discharged and we were given the recommendation to get a cool humidifier going in the house.  Also, if she were to start “barking” again, all we would need to do is drive her around with the windows down in the cold air or take her around the block in the stroller.  Apparently the cold misty SF fog is the perfect remedy for croup.

IMG_8331

By the time we got home, she was asleep and then went straight to bed and was out like a light.  In the morning, she was still coughing but it sounded like a regular cough.  Despite having less sleep last night, she’s back to the same happy little girl we know and love.

Scary

IMG_7540

We took the car through the car wash today and Janie was not a fan of the experience.  She said “no wash” and “no raining” at first but once the giant brushes came by, she lost it.

IMG_7546

Look at her clutching Big GG and her shoe!  Poor baby, I guess it is pretty scary.
