Dr. Kaplan also said that the jaundice had cleared so no blood work was needed.

IMG_9651

He did, however, get a second Hep B shot in the thigh.  He was NOT happy.  What Mama is happy about is that his weight is high enough that he can start stretching out his feeds and we don’t have to wake him for night feedings anymore.  Woohoo!!

1 month!!!

DSC_7155

Our little guy is 1 month old today!!  SO, out came the quilt and here is his 1-month photo.  So much has happened in his first month and we are so proud of this little chubster.  Here are some highlights:

  • Lost a pound from his birthweight and then gained it all back plus more!  His thighs are chunkier, he has cheeks now, and we can definitely feel his weight when we pick him up.
  • He has outgrown his newborn clothes and moved on to 0-3 month clothes by the second week.  He’s just about out of the newborn diapers too.  Why must they grow so fast?!
  • He no longer has jaundice and his eyes and skin have lost their yellow tone.
  • He had his first visit to the SF Zoo and has been a really good traveler on outings.
  • What we’ve learned about him so far is that he still hates getting his diaper changed, prefers to be held upright, has reflux, and still sleeps on his tummy when he’s really tired.  Over the past month, he has become a little fussier during the day but will sleep up to 4-5 hours at a time at night.  He also likes car rides as long as the car is moving.
  • Development: Started tracking objects and will watch the mobile above him.  Tolerates 1-2 minutes of tummy time before fussing.  He can lift his head for short moments while on his tummy.  He smiles randomly now but we haven’t really been able to elicit a social smile yet.

Happy 1 Month, Baby Boy!  We love you so much and look forward to watching you grow and develop!!  Love you!!

Peanut is 3 weeks old today!  Here are some highlights:

  • He’s outgrown the length of his newborn-size footy pajamas.  Onesies still fit but it’s getting snug around the belly.  So, we’re also mixing in his 0-3 clothes to the rotation of outfits.  He’s still in Newborn diapers.
  • This week, he met his 2nd cousins, Theo and Sadie, along with Auntie Ishya, Uncle Billy, Great Uncle Chusak, and Great Aunt Pisamai.  He also went out to see Mama’s work friends and met Aunties Stephanie, Nicole, and Patty for the first time.
  • Peanut had his first bath and he cried a bit at the end but seemed to enjoy part of it too.
  • He’s staying more awake during the day and seems to prefer being upright.
  • It also looks like this guy has a minor case of reflux but it’s totally manageable.  His maximum bottle volume is about 3 ounces.

Peanut is 2 weeks old today and we’ve had a pretty good week!

  • His weight is up by 11 ounces and passed his birth weight.
  • He is more awake during the day and sleeping more soundly at night.
  • Mama’s milk supply is abundant and there’s plenty of frozen milk in the freezer now.
  • His belly button stump fell off on Thursday and it’s not stinky.
  • This baby has been eating, sleeping, and pooping really well but he’s still looking yellow.
  • He went out for his first outing to the Farmer’s Market with the family on Saturday.

Another Weigh-in

IMG_0039

Today, Peanut had another appointment with his pediatrician.  He gained 11 ounces since last Thursday.  It’s a slower rate than the first week but he’s back to his birth weight plus a few more ounces.

Here’s an update on his stats:

7/31/15: 8 lbs, 12 oz (Birth Weight), 81st percentile
8/2/15: 8 lbs, 2 oz (Discharge Weight), 43rd percentile
8/3/15: 7 lbs, 12 oz (1st Weight Check), 31st percentile
8/6/15: 8 lbs, 6 oz (2nd Weight Check), 46th percentile
8/12/15: 9 lbs, 1 oz (3rd Weight Check), 61st percentile

Doctor said he looked vigorous and was happy with his weight gain and frequency of poops.  She also thought he still looked yellow but she’s going to give him another two weeks to see if he improves.  It’ll be his 1-month check-up and if he still looks yellow, she’ll order further tests to check his bilirubin levels and liver function.  She also checked his belly button and cleaned it up a bit to help it dry faster.

Peanut is 1 week old now!  He loves sleeping in this position so I thought it was the perfect way to kick off the weekly photos of him with Senor Fatty Duck Duck.  Ducky is much scruffier this time around since his big sis has really been playing with him quite a bit over the past 3 years.

Highlights from this week:

  • He was born. Yay!
  • He was discharged from the hospital on Sunday after lots of tests and a circumcision.
  • He lost some weight but then gained a bunch back!  He’s eating and pooping very well.  As of 8/6/15, he weighed 8 lbs, 6 oz.
  • Feedings are about every 2-3 hours now compared to wanting to eat every hour.  Last night, he slept more consistently and even needed to be woken for one of his feedings.
  • We’ve learned more about him: sleeps mostly during the day, preferred sleeping at an incline on a comfy pillow, started out hating to sleep in the bassinet at the hospital as well as the co-sleeper, now he can fall asleep in almost any position, loves sleeping in “turtle mode”, and hates having his diaper changed.
  • He’s most active in the evening from 8:00pm-12:00am.
  • This little boy is pretty easy-going so far.

Weight Check

IMG_8597

We worked very hard to get Mama’s milk supply up these past two days and this boy has been eating and pooping like a champ.

IMG_0037

We went back to the pediatrician today and he gained 10 ounces in 3 days!  Yippee!

Here are the stats:

7/31/15: 8 lbs, 12 oz (Birth Weight), 81st percentile
8/2/15: 8 lbs, 2 oz (Discharge Weight), 43rd percentile8/3/15: 7 lbs, 12 oz (1st Weight Check), 31st percentile
8/6/15: 8 lbs, 6 oz (2nd Weight Check), 46th percentile

IMG_8592

The doctor checked him out and was very pleased with his weight gain.  She said he would still look yellow for a while longer but was not concerned.  So, now Peanut is 6 ounces away from his birth weight and we have another weight check next Wednesday.

First Doctor’s Visit

IMG_0036

This afternoon, Peanut had his first visit to the pediatrician.  They weighed and measured him as usual and unfortunately his weight is down from his birth weight by 1 pound.  I guess Mama hasn’t been making enough milk so far despite feeding every hour.  The doctor took a look at his photos from birth and she has a hunch that he was a little swollen with fluid when he was born and wasn’t supposed to weigh as much.

So, he’s now 7 pounds, 12 ounces today at barely 3 days of age.

IMG_8443

Regardless, his weight is down and he was looking a little yellow (jaundice).  So, the game plan now is for Mama to start pumping to increase the milk supply and in the meantime, Peanut got his first taste of formula (just 2 ounces) this evening to help fill up his belly and to get him to poop more.

IMG_8450

Hopefully Mama’s milk will increase fast enough to get him back on track to dumpling status like his sister.  Our next appointment is on Thursday for a weight check.

IMG_8442

And here’s a photo of Big Sis and Mama at the doctor’s office.  Janie still wouldn’t talk to her doctor.  *sigh* Oh well.  She still managed to score a lollipop from her too.

3-year Check-up

IMG_4839

This morning, Janie went to see the doctor for her 3-year check-up.

IMG_4838

Every time we go back, the school bus toy in the waiting room seems a lot smaller.

IMG_4840

Now that she’s 3 years old, she gets weighed on the big scale.

IMG_4844

The nurse also measured her height in standing and Janie did a good job being still for the measurement even though she was very scared of the whole experience.  Look at that worried expression on her face.

Here is how she measured up:
Weight: 33 lbs (74th percentile)
Height: 36.75 inches (44th percentile)

IMG_4845

Another new thing she experienced was getting undressed in the room and putting on the big kid paper gown.  Initially she refused to take her clothes off but she came around and tolerated the gown quite well.

IMG_4847

She read a Winnie the Pooh book while we waited for the doctor.  Once she arrived, she got her ears, eyes, heart, lungs, and tummy checked.  She also refused to talk to the doctor – again.  The doctor always has to trust that we are not reporting any speech delays because if it were up to her examination, Janie would be a mute.

IMG_4848

At the end, she got a red lollipop and was so happy.  However, still not happy enough to perform for the doctor.  According to the doctor, she is growing well.  We also registered Peanut for this office and will get to see his big sister’s doctor too.  Hopefully by the time he arrives, Janie will be more willing to talk and interact with the doctor.

Janie is 3.

DSC_6255

It’s hard to believe that Janie is now 3 years old.  She’s now considered a “preschooler” and no longer a “toddler”.  We’re going to have to start paying admission for her at some places and the search for a preschool in SF will be on our minds for the next few months.

DSC_6257

This past year has been such a whirlwind.  She has grown into quite a little person with so much personality, language, and independence.  We have watched her learn how to ride a scooter and tricycle along with going up and down stairs reciprocally.  She runs with such gusto and can jump off of higher surfaces now.  We also transitioned her from being home with Mirian to full-time daycare this year, which was hard for her at first but now she looks forward to school, talks about her friends, and has learned lots of Spanish.

DSC_6260

This little girl has also learned how to be more independent in self-care.  I’m still in disbelief that she’s actually potty trained and can be trusted to be in underwear during the day now.  She wears a diaper at night still but will actually take naps without an accident.  She is also brushing and flossing her teeth (with a bit of help for thoroughness) and can dress herself completely now.  For some reason, she prefers to eat with her fingers but she is fully capable of using a fork and spoon and cuts soft foods with a knife pretty well.  Her fine motor skills are also coming along nicely.  Mommy is so proud of her pencil grasp and how she uses scissors.  Cooking (real and pretend) has also become a favorite activity.

DSC_6261

Everyday, we are amazed at all the language that comes out of this kid.  We can have real conversations with her now and I’ve lost count of how many words she has in both English and Spanish.  She seems to record everything she sees and hears around her and will spit back things that we didn’t even realize we’ve said or done.  Her memory is pretty good and a little scary at the same time.  She can count to at least 20 in English and Spanish and tries to count beyond that too.  She knows her letters really well and recites the ABCs in Spanish all day long.  She continues to love books and has memorized most of her favorites: Pout Pout Fish, Awesome Book of Love, Dragons Love Tacos are just a few. She has also had the pleasure of watching some TV programs and movies this year.  Curious George, Finding Nemo, Winnie the Pooh, Daniel Tiger, and Chip and Dale have been her favorites.  She was also into Frozen for a while but that had lost some steam lately.

DSC_6262

Over the past year, Janie has had some eventful things happen.  We finally put away her pack-n-play and got her a toddler bed, which she loves.  Janie had her first trip to the ER with croup, which was more of a scare for her rookie Mommy and Daddy.  She transitioned off the pacifier with flying colors but still loves her GG.  She traveled to Hawaii twice and also to Mexico, which was her first international trip.  Speaking of, she also had to get her first passport.  Janie also learned about siblings.  She’s going to be a big sister soon and has watched Mommy’s tummy grow.  She will usually say things like “that’s my baby brother” or “Mommy’s cooking baby brother”.

DSC_6265

In the past month, we recorded some new things about her:

  1. Self-care: Janie mastered putting on her a shirt correctly.  She is officially in underwear all day long without accidents (even during naps and in the car!)  When she uses the toilet at home, she insists that she doesn’t need the potty cover for the toilet.  She also brushes her teeth and flosses now with a little help at the end from Mommy.  We also transitioned her to toothpaste with fluoride after she learned how to not swallow the toothpaste.
  2. Language: This kid is getting pretty sassy and it shows in her language.  Some new phrases include: “Sounds good.  Let’s do that.” “Sounds gross.” “You’re stinky.” “I’ll be right back.” “That’s the rule.” “That’s not a question.” “Really?! Are you SURE?!” “How did that happen?” “Hey!” “What’s going on?” “Of course!”  We have also entered the “why” phase, which I had been dreading.  So far it hasn’t been TOO bad.
  3. Gross Motor: She has a new flamingo dance.
  4. Personality: We’ve always known that she likes to be independent but she’s definitely testing our patience this month.  There have been lots of moments when I know she heard what I asked her to do and she will selectively ignore it.  Sometimes she will just flat out say “no” and protest too.  At the same time, she is so sweet and caring most of the time.  When Mommy injures herself, she will console her and say “poor Mommy”.  She’s also very sweet to her stuffed animals.  I can also see the bossy side of her when she orders her stuffed animals and sometimes Mommy and Daddy around.  Her scowl and scolding face is a little frightening.  Poor Baby Brother is going to have to learn how to deal with his older sister.
  5. Stats: Size 7 shoes.  3T/4T clothes. Weight and height will be measured tomorrow at her doctor’s appointment.

DSC_6268

What a year (and month) it has been!  It’s sad to see the baby in her gradually disappear but we are so excited to see what else she will learn and accomplish this coming year.  She insists that she’s not a baby anymore and yet will still ask us to carry her at times.  Our little baby is now a full-fledged little kid now and we love her to pieces.  We are so proud of all that she has become and look forward to seeing how she handles being a big sister this coming year.
