4-year-checkup

Peanut went to see his doctor today for his 4-year well child visit. He had his blood pressure taken and did a great job with the hearing test.

He also got weighed and measured like a big boy.

His least favorite part was taking his clothes off. This guy rarely wants to take his shirt off, not even in the pool. So he wore Mama’s jacket while he waited for the doctor to enter the room.

He also got his eyes checked and failed on one of his eyes. Looks like he needs to keep wearing his glasses and see an optometrist again soon.

He was so brave today and did a great job getting two shots in his arm. As a special treat, he picked out an umbrella for the rainy season.

6-year Check-up

Janie went to see her pediatrician today for her 6-year well child visit.

She had her blood pressure and hearing checked.

Dr. Kaplan also told us that she will be leaving the practice this summer so we had our final visit with her today and reminisced about how much both kids have grown.

Here’s a photo of Janie during one of her early visits with her doctor.

We also got one final photo with her today and said our goodbyes. We loved our doctor. She was smart, funny, and very practical.

She also gives the kids lollipops.

This afternoon, we took Janie to the pediatrician for her 5-year check-up. She got a lollipop for being so patient at the bank appointment right before this appointment.

IMG_2676

She got her eyes checked like a big kid today. They don’t need to take pictures of her eyes anymore!

IMG_2677

She also got her hearing checked.

IMG_2678

Next was the scale and measuring her height.  She weighs 42.5 lbs and her height is 42.25 inches. Looks like she’s ready for a big kid carseat!!

Next was the exam room where she changed into a gown. Janie actually talked to the doctor today and got a clean bill of health for Kindergarten.

18 months

DSC_8153

Our baby boy turned 18 months old today and Mama is a little sad. He went from a dumpling baby that just rolled around on the floor to a walking, climbing, noisy monster of a toddler.

DSC_8172

Here are some highlights from this past month:

  • Gross Motor: He’s climbing the sofa daily and has started walking rather quickly back and forth in the house. I think he’s on the verge of running. Scary. He also does this funny squat thing that looks like he’s trying to jump but he’s not even close to coming off the ground.
  • Fine Motor: Not much has happened in this area but he has shown a greater interest in Duplos. He can put some pieces together but still needs some work. He likes playing with markers but doesn’t really care for scribbling yet. Must be a boy thing.
  • Speech: He has a few new words including “up” and “no” (his favorite). He also tries to yell at Alexa (our Amazon device) but it sounds more like “ah-ga”. Pretty funny. He nods yes and no more consistently now and still relies on signing eat, more, all done, and please. His receptive language seems to be pretty robust now and seems to understand things like “sit down”, “wash hands”, “clean up”, “take shoes off”.  He also says “cheese” when he seems me taking a photo of him. Unfortunately, his cheese-smile looks like Chandler Bing from the show “Friends”.
  • Self-care: He’s still a fan of utensils and has gotten pretty good with using a fork and spoon (when he wants to). He also tries drinking from an open cup whenever he gets the chance. One of Mama’s favorite tricks is how he puts his shoes away when we get home. He also throws his own diaper away in the trash. He will also wipe his hands and face if we give him a napkin or wipe.
  • He also learned how to give hugs and kisses. It’s so sweet.
  • Eating/drinking: He has a list of foods that he consistently doesn’t like including tomatoes, carrots, and bell peppers. Still loves meat, tofu, and beans. Pasta and noodles are also a good staple for him. It’s also cute watching him eat a sandwich. He does a pretty good job eating them without it completely falling apart. He’s also a big fan of water. He drinks so much!!
  • Personality: Boy oh boy does this guy have a strong personality. He has quite a temper but he’s also very friendly. When he’s mad, he throws whatever he has in his hand. He is also pretty stubborn and says “NO!” with a good scowl on his face when he really doesn’t want something. At the same time, he will come over and give you a random hug or kiss just minutes after a tantrum. He still loves his hippo/pacifier and will desperately call out “boo-boo, boo-boo” when he’s sad or tired. He also has a fondness for his muslin blankets. He’s also a daredevil and clown at the same time. It definitely keeps Mama on her toes all day long.
  • Habits: He sleeps well during the day and goes to bed well each night. Unfortunately, he still wakes 1-2 times each night but usually gets back to sleep on his own. He still LOVES taking a bath and now helps Mama apply lotion afterward. He still hates having his teeth brushed but we have to do it.

17 months

dsc_8115

Peanut is 17 months old today and he has really turned into quite a little boy. He seems to understand and communicate more and has definitely been moving more!!!

dsc_8070

Highlights from this past month:

  • Speech/Communication: Peanut can say “uh oh”, “apple”, “open”, “cheese”, “choo-choo”, and “up”. He’s signing “all done” and “please”. He is also nodding “yes” and “no”. He imitates lots of sounds and babbles with so much intent and variety in his tone. In Hawaii, he learned how to wag his finger to make a “no-no-no”. He also expresses himself with lots of facial expressions — he’s like a walking emoji.
  • Comprehension: He follows simple directions such as “wash hands”, “put in”, “sit down”, “no scratching”, and “go neh-neh (sleep)”. He waves bye and can do the Thai greeting of putting his hands together toward his face.  When we ask him to give a kiss, he lowers his forehead toward the person he’s “kissing”. He also gives hugs when his sister says “give me a hug”. He is also imitating lots of gestures and sounds – especially his sister’s.
  • Gross Motor: There’s definitely been a surge in his walking and balance. He walks with greater speed and can make turns quickly without falling (most of the time). Now that he can get up from the floor and squat down to pick things up, he’s always on the move! img_0324Climbing has also become a fun pastime for him. He learned how to climb onto his big sister’s bed and onto the couch with a little help from the reading chair. In Hawaii, he figured out how to walk on sand and in the shallow waves. He also enjoys dancing any time he hears music.
  • Fine Motor: This guy loves using a fork when he eats and can poke lots of stuff on his own now. Some of his favorite things to do right now are stacking, putting things inside of containers, using sticks to drum anything in sight, pressing buttons, and pointing.
  • Eating: He’s gotten pickier this past month and will spit out certain foods that he doesn’t like such as mashed potato, carrot, spinach, tomato, and rice (sometimes). Generally, however, he still enjoys eating and does it with gusto. His favorites right now are noodles, broccoli, any meat, bananas, and apple slices. He’s also learned how to suck puree out of fruit pouches. It definitely came in handy on the plane. He also enjoys drinking out of a plastic disposable drinking cup and straw (what he and Janie get at restaurants). He’s also figured out how to drink from an open cup as well.
  • Events: Hawaii was one of the highlights of this past month. He LOVED the pool and ocean. He got spooked by the waves at the beach one day but overcame it the next day. Another highlight of the month was Christmas and spending the week in Cerritos with family. He went to Disneyland for the 4th time and had the best time! He loved riding “It’s a Small World” and “Dumbo”. He also loved the parade and the music that is played all over the park.
  • Health: He’s had a few colds and even had a fever one night in Hawaii. His skin is still a problem but it healed after a week in the ocean and pool. Unfortunately, the rashes flared back up again once we returned to SF.
  • Sleeping/Habits: He’s still a champion napper and goes to bed without much of a fight at night. He still wakes up very early in the morning but somehow adjusted quite well to Hawaii time.  img_0611He also sleeps on his tummy or curled up like a turtle more frequently now.
  • Social: Peanut has truly come out of his shell as a full-fledged toddler. He has started to protest by laying down on the ground (just like his sister did) so we will be seeing more photos of him being what we like to call a potato. He’s also a feisty one and will throw, arch, cry, and hit if he’s really upset. There have been a few fights between him and his sister lately and much of them are started by him. He has also become territorial with Mama. If Janie tries to hug her, he scurries over and tries to pull her off. Ridiculous.

It’s hard to believe that our baby boy is just a boy now. He’s definitely a handful but we love him to pieces. Happy 17 months, Peanut!!

16 months

img_8559

Peanut turned 16 months today and has really become quite a little boy and less of a baby this past month. Here are the highlights from this past month:

  • Gross Motor: Peanut is walking farther, squatting, coming to stand from the floor, and climbing stairs/furniture. His favorite thing to do is climb into his stroller and stand up in it too.  Makes Mama super nervous but he loves it.  He is also really into picking up big objects with both hands and carrying them around the room.
  • Fine Motor: This guy has been doing all kinds of stuff including using a fork on his own, making hand motions with favorite songs, and playing with his sister’s tea set.
  • Speech/Language: It seems like he’s understanding so much more. He has some new words including “wow”, “ba-bo” for his hippo pacifier, “dats” for thank you. He also babbles plenty and we don’t really know what they mean yet. He is also signing with a lot more intention. He uses the signs for “eat” and “open” the most. Also, when he sees a dog (especially his doggy plush), he makes a high-pitched “wow-wow” sound.
  • Sensory: He still loves the swings at the playground and got reacquainted with sand today. He LOVES playing in the bathtub and splashing his sister. He went swimming in the hotel pool today and has been pretty fearless so far. He also does a little dance everytime he hears any kind of music. He does a head bob or a full-body wiggle. He continues to enjoy story/music time at the library and knows “Twinkle Twinkle”, “Wheels on the Bus”, and “Itsy Bitsy Spider”.
  • Growth: Size 5 shoes, Size 18 and 24-month clothes, Size 4 diapers
  • Activities: Election Day voting with Mama, Thanksgiving with family, and Hawaii!!
