Father’s Day 2016

IMG_2685

Today is Father’s Day so we took Dada out for dinner at Hillstone.

IMG_1072

The restaurant got rid of all their highchairs/booster seats so we came prepared with our own this time. It fit perfectly in the booth and Peanut had a great time eating off his own tray. We were also able to attach toys to the chair to keep him occupied for the 2-hour meal.

IMG_2690

He got a taste of just about everything we ate plus his food PLUS gave the snack catcher a try!

IMG_2703

We also brought an old bottle that we’ve been saving for so many years for this occasion.

IMG_2709

For dessert, we had key lime pie and the nice waitress put a candle on it just for kicks.

IMG_2707

Both kids ate well and were on their best behavior tonight to make this an extra-special meal.  Happy Father’s Day, Dada!!

First Movie!!

IMG_2431

Mama got today off because she had to work last Saturday, which was perfect because it was opening day for “Finding Dory”! Janie loves “Finding Nemo” and had seen the billboards everywhere lately. We thought it would be a good first movie for her in a theater so this morning, we drove to Emeryville (also where Pixar is located) to watch the 10am showing.

IMG_2434

It was fun finding all the different Finding Dory posters in the lobby.

IMG_2435

IMG_2436

IMG_2440

IMG_2444

IMG_2445

The theater was pretty dark for her and she was a little nervous about that. We brought a bag of popcorn from home, which helped settle her in her seat for the previews. It was A LOT of previews and she kept asking “where’s Finding Dory?”

I think she enjoyed the movie but she got scared of Hank, the octopus, and started to cry. She held onto us crying “I wanna go home! It’s too long!” I think that was her way of saying she was scared. Luckily, we convinced her to stay and finished the movie.

IMG_2452

For lunch, we stopped for pizza in the shopping center. We also went to Barnes and Noble to pick up a few new books including a “Finding Dory” storybook.  What a fun morning!

Octonauts Party

IMG_0385

Today we had Janie’s 4th birthday party and it had an Octonauts theme complete with sea creatures in a tub filled with water beads and hot dogs made into little octopuses.

IMG_0386

IMG_0388

We had a “buncha muncha crunchy carrots”, “seaweed chips”, and “coral pieces” as well.

IMG_0390

For the birthday cake, Janie wanted chocolate so we turned them into Captain Barnacles’ favorite drink, hot chocolate with extra marshmallows!

DSC_7518

Peanut had a fun time hanging out with Yai and Ta. He had his own little ocean-themed play area but didn’t stay on it for very long.

DSC_7519

Daddy made sandwiches for everyone and Janie had a small one of her own.

IMG_0400

IMG_0392

Peanut rode on Uncle Johnny’s shoulders for a bit and was amused by how much hair Uncle had on his head. There was plenty to hold onto up there!

https://youtu.be/ssxL-A4zuCM

The cake was the best part of the party and Janie was very funny toward the end of the birthday song.

IMG_0427

I guess she hasn’t quite outgrown her Daddy’s scowl yet.

IMG_0408

All her friends thoroughly enjoyed the cake after the singing. Here’s Vivian and the very little cake she had left.

IMG_0410

Henry gobbled up his cake in his own way and wore half the frosting on his face.

IMG_0411

Sophie licked all the frosting off before chomping into the cake.

IMG_0413

Cousin Alice was very dainty and took small licks of the frosting off her finger.

IMG_0415

Janie also enjoyed the frosting the most and wore some of it on her face as well.

IMG_0416

After cake, the kids went back outside for some more play time. This was the scene at the play dough table. Vivian and Henry had a standoff for the same chair. It was so cute to see how equally stubborn they were.

IMG_0838

Janie and Isla also sorted the water beads by color and each of the took home their favorite color.

IMG_0426

What a fun party! As an added bonus, Janie got a scoop of strawberry ice cream after dinner. This kid is really making the most of her 4th birthday!!

Birthday Song and Cupcakes

IMG_0254

This morning, Janie was so excited to have Mama walk her to school this morning.

IMG_0257

She insisted on wearing her Elsa shirt to school on her birthday and this is the outfit she came up with.

IMG_0264

After nap time, Mama and Dada went to her school to celebrate with her school friends.

IMG_0296

The class sang to her and then she got crowned by her teacher. She picked out the green in her crown the day before.

https://youtu.be/saKdO2HGifs

IMG_0780

IMG_0299

We also brought cupcakes for the whole class.  It was vanilla with confetti sprinkles per her request.

IMG_0327

After the party, we took her across the street to Waterbar where they have $1 oysters before 5pm.

IMG_0313

This girl was on cloud 9 and had all the oysters she could eat. I think she had a dozen all on her own.

IMG_0338

After dinner, we had a small birthday cake with candles for her to blow out. It was a very sweet birthday for a very sweet girl.

4 years

DSC_7506

Can it be true that our little girl is FOUR?!?! Yes, it is indeed true and we are so amazed by how much she can do, say, process, and feel. So much has changed about her but some things have stayed the same as well – including her love for that blue skirt that she’s had since she was 2!

DSC_7511

This sassy ball of energy has accomplished so much in the past year:

  • Writing and Reading: Janie can write just about every letter of the alphabet in upper case letters. I haven’t counted how many she does on her own and how many she can do after a demonstration or cueing. Regardless, she loves to spell out words and write everyone’s names.  She’s also learning the sounds of all the letters and still loves to have stories read to her.
  • Drawing: Her drawing skills have also made lots of gains these past 3 months. Her self-portrait has more detail including fingers and toes. We’ve seen her draw a turtle, elephant, balloon, triangle, and many other things.
  • Gross Motor: She’s a whiz on the scooter and we’ve put away the tricycle. She also learned how to hop on one foot and skip. She’s also been taking soccer every week and has learned to stop the ball, dribble, weave between cones, and kick the ball to the goal. This past December, Janie finally mustered up enough courage to go down the small slide and swim around the pool in Hawaii using her floatation vest. Now if only she would learn to jump in…I guess that’s for when she’s 4.
  • Speaking of Hawaii…one of her favorite trips this past year was Hawaii in December. Sophie and her family were there and so were Toni and Thomas! She also traveled to Vancouver for the first time and had so much fun with Amelia.
  • Favorites: Her favorite books include many of the Dr. Seuss books, Octonauts Creature Report book, Too Many Mangoes, and a few others I can’t remember at the moment. Her favorite movies/shows are still Frozen (now with Frozen Fever too), Octonauts, and Masha and the Bear. Favorite foods include Khao Mun Gai, bean burritos, raw fish, raw oysters, edamame, Tom Kha (coconut soup), shrimp, ice cream, and carrots.
  • She lost her precious GG this past year but she was replaced with Little Guy.
  • Growth: Janie is growing taller and we think she’s just under 40 inches tall. She was tall enough to ride her first rollercoaster at Disneyland and one of the slides at AT&T Park this year. We don’t know how much she weighs yet but she’s definitely slimmed down quite a bit. Luckily the cheeks have stayed around.  She’s wearing 4T and 5T clothes now and her PJ pants are quickly turning into capris. What’s nice about her growth is that she can reach a lot of public sinks now on her own. Ah…Mama’s back appreciates that the most.
  • Math: Janie loves to count – especially her reward pennies. The other day, she amazed us with some practical math during dinner. She said, “I can have two, Mommy can have two, so we will need four.” She does this all the time to us.
  • School: Janie has been enrolled in preschool this past year and has been making some nice strides. Nowadays, she will just drop off her backpack and run out to the play yard without even saying goodbye. She has lots of friends and plays with pretty much everyone in her class. She’s also picked up on little tidbits like where people live, what language they speak, and what kind of lunchbox and food they bring from home. She loves her teachers, Denise and Sharla, and they have told us how independent and creative she is throughout the day.
  • Personality: Our little girl is definitely going to make waves in life. She stands up for what she wants and believes in even if it makes people uncomfortable or frustrated (especially Mommy and Daddy). She also has a very creative side and has a keen ability to make something out of nothing. Toys are kind of useless for her because she can be perfectly happy playing with a straw and coffee stirrer. Janie is also very sweet and loving. When I listen to her play with her stuffed animals, I hear a very motherly caring part of her. She loves pretending to be a medic (like Peso, one of her favorite Octonauts) and has put together (on her own) a medical bag that she uses daily to bandage her family/stuffed friends, check their temperature, fix broken teeth, and give medicine.IMG_0303Her silly side has also blossomed this past year. She likes to make funny faces when Mama tries to take her photo and she cracks up at every funny or weird sound/word. She also makes up her own silly words/lyrics to tunes that she knows.
  • Big Sister: The biggest change for her 3rd year was the addition of a little brother to the family. She is so proud of him when we are outside with him (especially at school). She proudly says, “this is my little brother, he came out of Mommy’s tummy, I’m a big sister”. She likes to play with him but has also learned that now that he’s moving, she can’t peacefully play with her toys next to him without getting attacked by the little monster. We hear a lot of “PEANUT! NO!” when they are together lately. But in the end, she loves him to pieces and will help out with finding his puppy pacifier or feeding him snacks.
  • Challenges: With all the good things, there are also some difficulties with this little lady. We are still managing her behaviors with the penny reward system but she’s also become very smart about it. She has a knack for negotiating and nagging to a point where we almost give in sometimes. There are some days when she is motivated to do things on her own like get dressed or clean up and then there are days when she will complain “I’m too tired to do what I’m supposed to do”. Naps on weekends are rare but still necessary sometimes. She also loves playing with other kids but sharing is still hard when it’s not to her advantage. I suppose that’s normal for the age still. Toilet training is going well and she doesn’t have accidents during the day (including her naps at school) but she’s still unreliable at night – mostly because she wakes up slowly in the morning and gets too lazy to get up to the toilet. We’ve also learned how sneaky she can be and has been caught sneaking things she knows she’s not supposed to take or play with. She’s been caught sneaking tape out of Mama’s drawer, cutting things open with her scissors, and eating snacks that are not meant for breakfast – just to name a few.

IMG_0305

I know this is a long post but it’s hard to describe the mixed emotions we are feeling about our baby girl turning 4. She’s officially a kid with real memories of her many adventures now and growing up so quickly before our eyes. Happy 4th Birthday, Baby Girl. We love you!!

Birthday Eve Baseball Evening

IMG_0141

On the evening before Janie’s 4th birthday, we took her to a baseball game. She was so excited and couldn’t wait to go.

IMG_0144

She was too excited to eat anything at home so we ended up going a little early and she shared a big slice of pizza with Dada.

IMG_0145

It was a beautiful evening in SF.

IMG_0155

IMG_0168

In between innings, she went on the Coke bottle slide. She’s so close to being tall enough for the biggest/tallest slide.

IMG_0173

IMG_0186

We saved a few bucks by bringing our own popcorn from home and she was perfectly happy with it.

Disney on Ice

IMG_8079

Today was a special day for this little girl. To thank her for being such an awesome big sister, we treated her to a day with just Mama and Dada. The highlight of the day was going to see Disney on Ice Frozen. We got half-off tickets back in December and it was finally time to go!! Janie called the Oracle Arena North Mountain because we told her we were going to see Elsa today.

IMG_8078

When we arrived, Mama gave her a necklace and bracelet that had Elsa and Anna’s picture on it.

IMG_8075

We knew there would be lots of little girls dressed in Elsa and Anna costumes so this was our way of including her.

IMG_8082

We arrived early enough to walk around the stadium and took the escalator all the way up to check out the view from the top.

IMG_8083

Then we went down to the Club Level where we had some pretty good seats close to the floor.

We were so impressed with her ability to filter out all the crazy Frozen shwag that was being sold everywhere we turned. She didn’t care for the $24 light-up toys or the $20 t-shirts. She just kept saying “I don’t want any of that. I just want to go to my seat to see Elsa”.   The one thing she did notice was the man with the popcorn on his head while we waited for the show to begin. She leaned over and whispered to Mama and asked “Mama, can I have some popcorn?” So, we got a giant box of popcorn for $7 and there was plenty to share between the three of us and probably the people seated all around us.

IMG_8085

Before the show started, we walked a few steps down to check out the ice rink.  Throughout the whole preshow, we saw Mickey, Minnie, and a bunch of other princesses skate around and Janie kept leaning over to Mama and asking “Where’s Elsa?”

IMG_8099

IMG_8104

Mama was excited to see an ice skating reindeer (Sven) but the highlight of the show for Janie was when Elsa came out and sang “Let it Go”.

https://youtu.be/wf2KmKIq_bE
Here’s a video of Janie singing along to the song with the cup of popcorn in her mouth.

IMG_8107

This kid was literally at the edge of her seat the whole time and it was so fun to see her face light up throughout the show.

IMG_0587

Janie said the only part that she didn’t like was when Marshmallow came out. Dada thought it was pretty cool.

IMG_8122

It was so good that she couldn’t be bothered to look at the camera for a photo.

IMG_8137

For lunch, we went to Fenton’s Creamery. It’s a famous ice cream parlor that was even featured at the end of the movie “Up”. Janie ate her kid’s hamburger and fruit before picking out her ice cream from the display.

IMG_8139

She chose Rocky Road – the perfect ice cream that has chocolate ice cream and marshmallows (her favorites!) Her sundae came with rainbow sprinkles and two mini cookies on the side too!

IMG_0590

This is one happy little girl.

IMG_8128

At lunch, she also drew a picture of Elsa (person with yellow squiggly hair).

IMG_8133

Dada (plunging neckline) and Mama (dress and cape) helped add a couple details and then she wrote the word “FROZEN” at the bottom.

IMG_8142

When we got back to the city, we parked the car and took a walk around the neighborhood.

IMG_8146

Janie carried around her big box of popcorn and snacked as we walked.

IMG_8147

Then we stopped at MoMo’s for happy hour $1 oysters!! Janie ate all 6 of them on her own and was happy as a clam. Heh heh.

What a fun day with our First Born. Peanut stayed with Mimi all day and will have his own day later when he’s a little older.

Valentine’s Day at School

IMG_7550

There was a big celebration of Valentine’s Day at school today. The kids exchanged valentines (we gave DumDums and pencils) and the kids had a special presentation to the parents at the end of the day. Luckily Mama was home today so she was able to watch too.

IMG_7553

All the kids had worked hard over the past two weeks practicing some love songs, making ukuleles, cutting out hearts, and making necklaces for each of their parents.

https://youtu.be/v1guz2PsA4M

https://youtu.be/q7WYU6XhB4Q

They all performed for us this afternoon, strumming their ukuleles and singing 4 songs.

IMG_7563

Then they handed out their gifts for us. We didn’t even know Janie could cut out a heart already! What a nice job she did. The ukuleles also had rubberbands that made noise when you pluck them. Very clever.

IMG_7564

IMG_7569

Before we left school, all the kids decorated their own cookies and ate them (of course).

IMG_7574

To celebrate what a good job she did, we took her to SuperDuper and she ate about 75% of this burger!

IMG_7578

We took the train home after dinner and then Janie played her ukulele some more.

IMG_7583

IMG_7584

She also insisted that we both wear our leis this evening before bed and snapped a photo.
