Monday Drop-off

IMG_8865

This morning, before heading out to school, Janie helped get her brother changed and dressed for the day.  He was going to drop her off at school today!

IMG_8866

We all walked together to Janie’s school and said our goodbyes.  She had a few tears when Mama left but she was going to be brave this Monday morning.  Unfortunately, Mama had to leave so quickly that no photos were taken today.

After dropping off big sister, Peanut got to cruise the city streets in his stroller.

IMG_8868

He pretty much slept through Mama’s doctor’s appointment and the whole way home.

4th Day of Preschool

IMG_8572

Today, Janie rode to school in her brand new umbrella stroller.

IMG_8577

With apples in hand, she was ready to go!  Dada walked her there and dropped her off.  There were a few tears but no more than usual.

IMG_8608

In the afternoon, both Mama and Dada picked her up and she happily told her teacher, “Both of my family picked me up!”

IMG_8610

She was in the middle of making a necklace and the teacher tied it up for her to take home.

IMG_8609

She also painted a treasure map today and took that home as well.

IMG_8611

This kid was so happy to go home.

IMG_8612

The walk home was nice along The Embarcadero and Janie was in good spirits.  Her teacher reported that she has been doing very well for her first week.

3rd Day of Preschool

IMG_8512

This morning, Dada had an early meeting in the office so Mama and Yai drove her to school and Mama did the drop-off.  She tried to be brave but had such a sad look on her face.  She showed me her cubby and the door to her classroom.

IMG_8513

She’s an alligator this year.  Before I left, she grabbed my leg and said, “don’t go” and had a few tears.  I said goodbye and the teacher consoled her.

IMG_8534

Dada picked her up this afternoon and the teacher reported that she was fine after the initial tears.  They actually walked home today, which took about an hour since she was so distracted by everything she saw on the way home.

IMG_8537

Luckily, our umbrella stroller arrived this afternoon and now they will have a little help getting her to and from school within a reasonable amount of time.

2nd Day of Preschool

IMG_2106

This afternoon, Mama and Dada picked Janie up together.

IMG_2107

Dada found her drawing and she was so happy to see him.

IMG_8495

IMG_8496

She had such a funny expression when she saw Mama at the car.

IMG_8497

Then she asked, “why are you in your pajamas?” and thought it was so silly.

IMG_8498

The preschool does a newsletter everyday describing and showing what they do each day.  Here are Monday and Tuesday’s:

IMG_8524

There’s a picture of her at the water table with a classmate Jamie (top right).

In this one, there’s a picture of Janie painting with another girl (2nd row on the left).

1st Day of Preschool

IMG_8405

Our little girl started preschool today!! Initially she said she didn’t want to go but somehow we got her fed, changed, and shoes on.

IMG_8408

We also got her giraffe backpack that matches her lunchbag.

IMG_8506

IMG_8409

This was the best I could do in getting a photo of her this morning.

IMG_8411

IMG_8412

Dada was going take her to school on the train today and she was pretty excited.

IMG_8413

IMG_8416

IMG_8417

There they go!! Bye, Baby Girl!!

IMG_8419

At drop-off, Janie was sad and said she cried for her Daddy.  Dada also said that she said “I want my grandma.”

IMG_8420

Look at that face.  It was probably a good idea that Mama didn’t do the drop-off.

IMG_8421

Around snacktime, Dada went back to check on her.  She was doing better but still very quiet.  She had pancakes but refused the syrup. What?! That’s not like her!  When I asked her later why she didn’t have syrup, she said “I eat syrup at home.”  She was still a bit sad to see Dada leave the second time but was fine once she found the water table.

IMG_0033

In the afternoon, we picked her up on our way to Peanut’s doctor’s appointment.  She was in good spirits and was able to report some of the things she did and one friend that she played with.  When I checked her lunch, she managed to eat all the rice and chicken that I sent with her but left everything else.  I’m just happy she was able to eat something.

2nd preschool drop-off

IMG_7920

For lunch, we met up with Dada at the street food place under the bridge.  Then she took an hour-long nap in her stroller before heading to school.

IMG_7922

At school, we waited in the lobby for 3:00 and then we headed to her classroom.

IMG_7925

The kids in the class were just waking up from their naps so we sat in the empty classroom and played for a bit.  Once they were back in the classroom, Mama said goodbye and left.

IMG_7929

When it was time for pick-up, Janie was sitting at a table having snack with one of the teachers nearby.  They reported that she had a couple tears but recovered quickly. Overall, they are confident that she’s going to do well.

IMG_7930

As a special treat, we got her some fresh apple juice at the Ferry Plaza before dinner.

2-hour trial

IMG_7897

Today’s preschool visit was for two hours from 3pm-5pm.  We tried to put her down for a nap prior to the visit but she just laid there in bed for about an hour.  So of course, on the walk over to the school, she fell asleep in the stroller.  She slept for about 30 minutes on our walk and then another 30 minutes in the lobby.  That’s one of the doors to her classroom in the background of the photo.  Around 3:20, she woke up on her own and agreed to go to the classroom with Mama.  Before heading in, she went potty and then Mama helped her to the rug for story time and said a quick goodbye.

IMG_7900

When Mama came back, she was found playing at the craft table with 4 other girls.  Her expression was so funny.  Too bad the photo is out of focus.  She did a lot of cutting this afternoon and the teacher reported that she did great today.  As expected, Janie did a lot of observation but what was unexpected was that she didn’t cry and she also refused the snack that teacher offered her.  Instead, she said, “I’ll eat my snack at home.”  Funny girl.  The teacher also said that she refused to let the teacher take her mug shot for her cubby.

IMG_7902

We are so proud of our big girl being so brave today.  We have another 2-hour visit tomorrow and then her first official day of school is Monday 8/3.  We are hopeful that the transition will be just as successful.

Preschool Visit

IMG_7771

This morning, Janie went to visit her new preschool for the first time.  It was scheduled for 11-12pm and we were asked to pack a lunch for her.  We all went together and took the train to school.  That was an exciting change for her.

IMG_7787

Mama and Dada got to join her for the hour and we all met her teachers and classmates.

IMG_7788

She got to play with toys and briefly played with two 4-year-old girls who will be going to the older class next month.

IMG_7789

Before lunch, everyone sat on the rug for a couple stories.  She got to sit on Dada’s lap today.

IMG_7798

IMG_7799

Next was potty time and Janie used one of the little toilets all on her own and washed her hands at one of the Janie-sized sinks too.

IMG_7795

She joined the kids for lunch and was so happy to see that Dada had packed her one of her favorite meals: Kao Mun Gai (chicken rice with sauce, cilantro, and cucumber).  Dada had to leave for work but Mama stayed with her for lunch.  She opened the containers on her own and ate like a big girl.

IMG_7797

On our way out, we saw where the kids will be napping.  It’s in the room next door and they all have their own cots with bedding and blankets that they brought from home.

IMG_7803

What a great first visit!  It was super easy considering Mama and Dada were there with her.  We will have to see how Thursday goes when we drop her off for 2 hours on her own.  This is the entrance to her new school.  It’s part of Bright Horizons and Marin Day Schools.  We hope she will love it.

IMG_0774

To celebrate a successful visit, Janie got a special treat while Mama and Yai had lunch.

IMG_7802

She got some orange jello from one of the dim sum carts.  Cool!!

Letters and Numbers

IMG_7039

This afternoon, Janie practiced building letters with sticks.  Let’s call this our version of summer school.  🙂
https://youtu.be/K7Dr2EtKjpY

IMG_7042

She also worked on building a calendar with this magnetic board that we got from Auntie Marie.  She knows all the days and months of the year in English and Spanish but hasn’t actually put it all together before.

IMG_7043

She did great from 1-10 but needed some help sorting through the pile for the teens and 20s.  Not bad for her first try.

Missing school?

https://youtu.be/uzYJDlRKfLs
It’s her first day of “summer vacation” and she’s been speaking Spanish to me all day.  Maybe she misses school.  Sometimes Janie’s “teacher mode” gets a little annoying but it’s good to see what she’s learned.  Today, she was pretending to be Tia Irma and leading the morning lesson of the vowels and ABCs in Spanish.
