Fish-tastic Friday

IMG_4236

Both Mommy and Daddy got the day off so Janie had a “no-school-no-work” day.  It started out in bed with Daddy watching videos of people building aquariums.

Then we went to the Academy of Sciences to see lots of fish.

Her favorite parts were seeing the scuba divers in the big tank and touching the sea urchin.

For lunch, we ate out on the terrace. She played with her Nemo magnets while we waited for the food to arrive.

Janie had asked for clams earlier in the morning so she got a big bowl of clam chowder.  She was a little disappointed that it didn’t have the shells in there but ate it anyway.

Next stop was Aqua Forest Aquarium where she went to see her favorite black goldfish while Daddy did a little shopping.

It was taking a while, so she went out front to blow bubbles.

She made up a bubble song and dance on the sidewalk.

She also got a special Easter cookie from the bakeshop down the street and went straight for the eye and the wing made of icing.

Walnut Creek

Today afterschool, Janie and Mommy drove to Walnut Creek to visit Auntie Mai and her new baby girl, Sabrina.  Janie was a little hesitant around the baby so we didn’t get any pictures of her with the newest member of the Cheeksters.

Instead, she did some coloring with Sophie at the coffee table.  They didn’t say much to each other at Auntie Mai’s house.

For dinner, we went to The Habit for burgers and that was when these two girls really hit it off.

It was so cute watching the two of them sitting at the table having conversations with each other.

Sophie: It’s hot. You have to blow it. (referring to the fries)
Janie: Yeah, I can’t eat it right now.

Janie was pretty good with sharing her fries and pineapple.  She also had a funny conversation with Auntie Ranee.

Auntie Ranee: Where’s Daddy right now?
Janie: He’s at home.
Auntie Ranee: What is he doing?
Janie: He’s reLAAAAxing.

We got a good laugh out of that one.

Before heading home, we stopped at Sprouts to pick up some carrots, bell peppers, and cookies.

Feeding the Fish

https://youtu.be/HQ1oJ61xym0
One of my favorite things to watch lately is Janie helping Daddy feed the fish.  She’s pretty good at following specific directions, pouring or pinching out the right amount, and putting things away.  You can also hear her trying to figure out which food goes with which fish.  She’s also started asking lots of “why” questions.  I can’t believe we’ve entered that stage of development already.

blackberries

This kid cracks me up:

Janie: I want more berries, please. (This is after having 2 helpings already.)

Mama: Nah, I think you ate enough.  You’re gonna poop blackberries tomorrow.

Janie: Hm. Sounds good!

fire alarm

IMG_3935

The fire alarm went off in our building this evening and Janie was pretty scared of the siren and the loud announcement overhead in our unit.  Our side of the building had to evacuate so Daddy carried her down 8 flights of stairs to the sidewalk.  She got to see the firetruck all lit up with their supplies hanging out but was a little too stunned to enjoy any of it.  Luckily it was just a false alarm (as usual) and we were back upstairs in just 15 minutes.  When we got back home, I asked her “were you scared?” and she replied “uh, yeah”.  She also said, “the people are not talking anymore”.

Interviews

This morning, I took this cute video clip of Janie while she was playing:

During our spaghetti dinner, I took another one:

She gets really shy when we’re out with other people and some don’t believe that she talks so much.  I’m gonna have to try to catch more videos of her at home where she doesn’t stop talking.

35 months

IMG_3837

Is she really only 1 month away from turning 3?!  She’s a sassy, independent, and very talkative little girl now who insists that she’s not a baby anymore.  When someone asks her “how old are you?” She promptly replies with “almost 3”.

Here are highlights from this past month:

  1. I feel like I’m saying this every month but Janie’s language has really blossomed this month.  Here are some things that she started saying: “not you!”; “almost 3”; “I’ll be mad!”; “this is wonderful”; “it’s so comfortable”; “GG is so stinky”; “that’s so gross”; “how did that happen?”; “really? are you sure?”; “I’m awake!”; “did you have fun at work?”
  2. Hawaii with Family: Janie was anticipating this trip for at least a month and when we got there, she was so happy.  Warming up to the ocean took almost no time and she was obsessed with playing in the sand.  She called our hotel room the “Hawaii house” and our rental car the “Hawaii car”.  It’s been over a week since we left and she still talks about it with such detail.
  3. Relationships: Janie understands how some people are related to others.  She knows that Yai is Mommy’s Mama, Ta is Mommy’s Dada, Ankong is Daddy’s Dada, and Ama is Daddy’s Mama.  She also knows that Uncle Jason is Daddy’s brother and Uncle Johnny is Mommy’s brother.
  4. Clothes: Janie is starting to have an opinion on what she wears.  She prefers her blue skirt over everything else and her favorite pair of shoes are the “small ones”, which are the black mary janes with the birds on them.
  5. Baby Brother: Janie is really starting to talk about her baby brother and gives kisses to Mommy’s tummy.  She will also point to her full tummy (after a big meal) and say “this is Baby Brother”.
  6. Favorites for the month: bell peppers, celery, pretzels, vanilla ice cream, and her new Batman thermos.  She still loves Finding Nemo and Chip and Dale and got to watch all she wanted on the plane rides to and from Hawaii.  She can name almost every character in the movie and gets so excited when we go to the pet store or aquarium.
  7. New favorite books: “Mix It Up”, “Dragons Love Tacos”, and “Los Pollitos”.  Still a big favorite: “Finding Nemo Seek and Find”.
  8. Dentist: Janie went to see the dentist this past month and has started flossing more regularly.  I think she actually enjoys it.
  9. Behavior: Janie can be either really good or really bad.  Most of the time, she follows directions and rules well.  She is well-behaved in restaurants and doctor’s appointments too.  Then at other times, she will selectively ignore Mommy’s directions or just straight up say “NO! I don’t want to ___.”  We’ve had to start counting to 5 to get her going and she usually waits until about 4 to start moving.  I gotta say that she’s like two different girls sometimes and she makes me smile and then so frustrated all within a matter of seconds.
  10. Trying new things: She has conquered some of her fears this month.  One of them was going through a tunnel at the aquarium.  She is also touching the starfish and sea urchins at the touch pool there.  She also learned that walking down to the 1.5-foot pool at the Sheraton Waikiki is more fun than scary.  She also rediscovered pineapple, which she once thought hurt her tongue (after she had eaten a whole container in one sitting).  She will now eat them freely and say “pineapples don’t hurt my tongue anymore”.

Happy 35 months, KK!  We love you!!
