breakfast udon

IMG_4634

Mama’s favorite udon place is open at 7am so we went out to pick up breakfast this morning.

IMG_4636

Peanut and his pal Avia were strolling the streets of Waikiki pretty early.

IMG_4638

We ordered the food to go and brought it back up to the hotel room for Janie to eat.  She made good use of the tv table that she borrowed from Auntie Yoon

morning musubi

IMG_4467

Peanut was up early again so he got to take a walk down Kalakaua Ave with Mama to pick up some breakfast.

IMG_4474

We got spam musubi at 6:30 am when it opened.

IMG_4480

We bought so many different kinds to share with the family.

IMG_4478

It looked like he wanted one for himself.

IMG_4483

Once Janie woke up, she picked out the one with spam, egg, and cucumber.

North Shore

IMG_4397

Today, we went to North Shore with Uncle Jason and Auntie Jia.

IMG_4403

We went to Laniakea Beach (aka Turtle Beach) but all the turtles were surfing in the big waves instead of napping on the beach like they usually do.

IMG_4407

After the beach, we ate lunch at the shrimp trunk and then headed to Matsumoto for Shave Ice.

IMG_4409

This girl was so happy and ate her fair share of shave ice and the ice cream underneath.

IMG_4415

IMG_4420

She also scored a smushed penny from the store inside.

IMG_4422

Somewhere along the way, Janie acquired some sticks and played with them in the car on our way to the Dole Plantation.

IMG_4434

Instead of paying lots of money for the train ride, we opted for a handful of fish food and watch the koi fight over the food.

The kids also posed for some pictures.

IMG_4461

IMG_4456

No visit to the Dole Plantation would be complete without some Dole Whip!

IMG_4460

Peanut scored his very own Matsumoto Shave Ice shirt and it was a good thing we bought it because he had a blowout right after we bought it.

IMG_4463

What a fun and exciting day!  This is how Janie fell asleep tonight.  So sweet.

Hawaiian shower

IMG_4372

This morning is rained lightly on our way to breakfast.  For a girl who is growing up in the midst of a California drought, this is a strange thing to understand.  She kept saying “I need an umbrella!”  She also didn’t understand why the sun was still out.

IMG_4374

At McDonald’s Mama and Dada had the spam and eggs platter.  Janie got her very own hotcakes and sausage today!

IMG_4375

She also helped prepare Mama’s coffee.

IMG_4377

Peanut just chewed on his fingers and blanket while everyone ate.

IMG_4379

On the way back, it was sunny again and Janie practiced her “shaka”.

IMG_4381

IMG_4391

Back at the hotel, we hung out with Uncle Jason and Auntie Jia while they ate the breakfast we brought back for them.  We were all smiles including this chubby little fellow.

Malasadas!

IMG_4284

This afternoon, we stopped at Leonard’s Bakery to pick up some tasty malasadas.

IMG_4306

We had so many to choose from!!

IMG_4312

IMG_4319

Peanut really wanted a taste of Mama’s haupia-filled malasada.

IMG_4344

Janie shared a chocolate-filled one with Dada.

IMG_4346

Yum!

Katsu Dinner

IMG_4189

After the pool, everyone got washed up and then we went out for an early dinner.  Janie had just enough energy left to eat edamame and drink her milk before falling asleep at the table.

IMG_4203

So, she spent the rest of dinner in the stroller asleep.

IMG_4194

Meanwhile, Peanut gave the highchair a try.  It was his first time and he did great!

IMG_4196

He enjoyed eating his fingers and then tried to grab things off the table.

IMG_4199

IMG_4200

He had a blast being a big boy!

pool buddies

IMG_4161

These girls really worked up an appetite after a whole morning in the pool.

IMG_4184

In addition to swimming and snacking, they loved getting cold water from the coolers.  They felt like big kids doing it all by themselves.

IMG_4181

At the end of the day, they got a special treat – ice cream!!  Look at those happy faces!!

California Time

IMG_4111

The kids were up super early today as expected for their first morning in Hawaii.  Luckily the stores open at 6am so Janie and Mama did a little shopping.  Janie picked out a cooler bag for herself and browsed all the trinkets in the store.  She particularly liked this sparkly turtle.  No, we didn’t buy it.

IMG_4115

We then went to the Infinity Pool for breakfast and to watch the sunrise.  Peanut was not amused by the lounge chair this morning.

IMG_4123

We went to breakfast around 7 and scored a table at Eggs n Things with virtually no wait.  Janie tried out the new light-up pen she picked out at the store.

IMG_4126

We also ordered her very own kid’s breakfast.  All she wanted was the sausage.

IMG_4127

One of the nice things about being up early is that the sidewalks of Waikiki are empty.  Janie ran back to the hotel without having to dodge the crowds.

Pie Party

IMG_3916

We went to Jack and Reese’s house for their annual pie party.  Poor Peanut didn’t get to taste any of the pies.

IMG_3918

There were 16 pies to taste and Janie voted for her favorite.  She liked the lemon poppy seed one the best.

IMG_3920

After lunch, she drew pictures in the sand in the backyard.

IMG_3922

I’m not sure what she was doing here.

Date with Dada

IMG_0160

While Peanut was in Oakland with Mama, Janie got picked up from school by Dada and they went Downtown together.  First stop was to the mall for a snack and to do some shopping.

IMG_0165

For dinner, they had Chipotle and shared a chicken bowl.

IMG_0166

Dada reported that she did a fantastic job following directions this evening – especially at the train station and on the train ride home.  She earned 3 pennies today!
