42 months

DSC_7256

This big girl is 3 and a half years old today!!!!!  Boy oh boy…so much has happened in the last 3 months for this bundle of energy and sass.  Let’s review:

  • Janie became a BIG SISTER!!!!!!  She welcomed her baby brother to the world with open arms and has been so helpful. She is so proud to be a big sister and hasn’t shown any jealousy.  However, he definitely (and appropriately) makes herself known when she needs to.  Her favorite phrase in these occasions is “don’t forget about me!”
  • Grandma was here for 2 months and they really bonded.  It’s great to see them together.
  • Janie started preschool during this period and had some tears (as expected) during the first month but now she will say “bye mom – go to work now”.  She has made friends and even started soccer and yoga.
  • Fine motor: Janie mastered buttoning and unbuttoning her PJs and opening the  string cheese wrapper all on her own!
  • “Frozen” is still a hit with her but she has also started watching “The Octonauts”, which is a refreshing change for Mama and Dada.
  • Janie went on a family trip to Napa twice in September and got to hang out with Zoe and her cousin Alice on the different trips.
  • Taking walks outside is getting a lot easier and we don’t have to take the stroller all the time.
  • We also had several play dates and got to hang out with Sophie more.
  • She has become a little more selective about what she eats and when but she is still a great eater.
  • We started a token system recently and it has taught her how to be a big girl at home and outside.  She has also added some new chores around the house including putting away everyone’s shoes and putting away the utensils from the dishwasher.
  • Stats: Height is 37 inches.  Weight is around 33 pounds.  She’s wearing 3T and 4T clothes.  Got a flu shot like a champ.  Started taking albuterol for her cough.

Happy 42 months, Big Girl!!  We love you so much and loves watching you learn and grow!

2 months!

DSC_7247

I can’t believe he’s two month old already!  This month has been all about fattening up and growing for him.  Here are some highlights:

  • He has outgrown his 3-month clothes and the 3-6 month clothes are getting stretched out to the max.  I had to buy some 6-9 month clothes the other day and there are some outfits that he outgrew before I could even try the on.
  • He’s still in Size 1 diapers at home but we put him in Size 2 when we go out.
  • He loves baths now and smiles whenever he gets his head washed.
  • Speaking of, he’s smiling now!!  It’s such a nice change from the default scowl that he typically has on his face.  Too bad I couldn’t get one on his quilt photo.
  • Peanut is also quite a talker.  He likes to coo and imitate sounds and facial expressions.  I’ve heard “hoo”, “oh”, “gah”, “goo”, and of course “MA!”
  • This month, he got to meet Ta (Mama’s dad), Uncle Johnny, Auntie Joy, and cousin Alice. We also had to say goodbye to Yai when she flew back home to Cerritos this month.
  • We took two trips to Napa this month and Peanut stayed in a hotel for the first time.
  • He celebrated both Dada and Mama’s 40th birthdays and also met some of their closest friends and their kids.
  • We also picked up his birth certificate, made a passport, and took him to the Golden Gate Bridge this month.
  • Peanut has found his hand and will put them in his mouth on his own now.
  • Tummy Time is still not his favorite but he’s getting much more tolerant of it.  When he’s propped up on a boppy pillow, he lasts longer but when he’s on a flat surface he’s still able to lift his head and turn.  This definitely helps when Mama makes him nap on his tummy during the day.
  • Car rides are also not his favorite.  If the car is moving, he’s cool but otherwise, he will complain.  He’s also much fussier during the day and prefers to be upright or held instead of on his back.  However, he’s taken a liking to the mobile above his bed and will quietly watch, kick his legs, and coo to himself for about 10 minutes.
  • We think he had a growth spurt and a cold all in the same three days.  He was definitely fussier and was inconsolable one afternoon when Yai was watching him while Mama was picking up Janie from school. We are so relieved that it only lasted those couple days.

New School Year

IMG_9632

Janie’s preschool started their new school year today so both Mama and Dada picked her up today.  She was in the middle of a goodbye circle when we arrived.  They were saying goodbye to the older Alligators who were moving on to the Whale class.

IMG_9634

Janie also got a new cubby photo.  Her eyes were closed in the one she had last month so Mama was so happy to see a better photo for this school year.  Her cubby also got moved to the other side of the hallway with the rest of her classmates.

DSC_7156

For the new year, we also got some photos of Janie with the quilt.  It was mostly because Mama had just taken Peanut’s picture and she thought it was her turn.

DSC_7155

Our little guy is 1 month old today!!  SO, out came the quilt and here is his 1-month photo.  So much has happened in his first month and we are so proud of this little chubster.  Here are some highlights:

  • Lost a pound from his birthweight and then gained it all back plus more!  His thighs are chunkier, he has cheeks now, and we can definitely feel his weight when we pick him up.
  • He has outgrown his newborn clothes and moved on to 0-3 month clothes by the second week.  He’s just about out of the newborn diapers too.  Why must they grow so fast?!
  • He no longer has jaundice and his eyes and skin have lost their yellow tone.
  • He had his first visit to the SF Zoo and has been a really good traveler on outings.
  • What we’ve learned about him so far is that he still hates getting his diaper changed, prefers to be held upright, has reflux, and still sleeps on his tummy when he’s really tired.  Over the past month, he has become a little fussier during the day but will sleep up to 4-5 hours at a time at night.  He also likes car rides as long as the car is moving.
  • Development: Started tracking objects and will watch the mobile above him.  Tolerates 1-2 minutes of tummy time before fussing.  He can lift his head for short moments while on his tummy.  He smiles randomly now but we haven’t really been able to elicit a social smile yet.

Janie is 3.

DSC_6255

It’s hard to believe that Janie is now 3 years old.  She’s now considered a “preschooler” and no longer a “toddler”.  We’re going to have to start paying admission for her at some places and the search for a preschool in SF will be on our minds for the next few months.

DSC_6257

This past year has been such a whirlwind.  She has grown into quite a little person with so much personality, language, and independence.  We have watched her learn how to ride a scooter and tricycle along with going up and down stairs reciprocally.  She runs with such gusto and can jump off of higher surfaces now.  We also transitioned her from being home with Mirian to full-time daycare this year, which was hard for her at first but now she looks forward to school, talks about her friends, and has learned lots of Spanish.

DSC_6260

This little girl has also learned how to be more independent in self-care.  I’m still in disbelief that she’s actually potty trained and can be trusted to be in underwear during the day now.  She wears a diaper at night still but will actually take naps without an accident.  She is also brushing and flossing her teeth (with a bit of help for thoroughness) and can dress herself completely now.  For some reason, she prefers to eat with her fingers but she is fully capable of using a fork and spoon and cuts soft foods with a knife pretty well.  Her fine motor skills are also coming along nicely.  Mommy is so proud of her pencil grasp and how she uses scissors.  Cooking (real and pretend) has also become a favorite activity.

DSC_6261

Everyday, we are amazed at all the language that comes out of this kid.  We can have real conversations with her now and I’ve lost count of how many words she has in both English and Spanish.  She seems to record everything she sees and hears around her and will spit back things that we didn’t even realize we’ve said or done.  Her memory is pretty good and a little scary at the same time.  She can count to at least 20 in English and Spanish and tries to count beyond that too.  She knows her letters really well and recites the ABCs in Spanish all day long.  She continues to love books and has memorized most of her favorites: Pout Pout Fish, Awesome Book of Love, Dragons Love Tacos are just a few. She has also had the pleasure of watching some TV programs and movies this year.  Curious George, Finding Nemo, Winnie the Pooh, Daniel Tiger, and Chip and Dale have been her favorites.  She was also into Frozen for a while but that had lost some steam lately.

DSC_6262

Over the past year, Janie has had some eventful things happen.  We finally put away her pack-n-play and got her a toddler bed, which she loves.  Janie had her first trip to the ER with croup, which was more of a scare for her rookie Mommy and Daddy.  She transitioned off the pacifier with flying colors but still loves her GG.  She traveled to Hawaii twice and also to Mexico, which was her first international trip.  Speaking of, she also had to get her first passport.  Janie also learned about siblings.  She’s going to be a big sister soon and has watched Mommy’s tummy grow.  She will usually say things like “that’s my baby brother” or “Mommy’s cooking baby brother”.

DSC_6265

In the past month, we recorded some new things about her:

  1. Self-care: Janie mastered putting on her a shirt correctly.  She is officially in underwear all day long without accidents (even during naps and in the car!)  When she uses the toilet at home, she insists that she doesn’t need the potty cover for the toilet.  She also brushes her teeth and flosses now with a little help at the end from Mommy.  We also transitioned her to toothpaste with fluoride after she learned how to not swallow the toothpaste.
  2. Language: This kid is getting pretty sassy and it shows in her language.  Some new phrases include: “Sounds good.  Let’s do that.” “Sounds gross.” “You’re stinky.” “I’ll be right back.” “That’s the rule.” “That’s not a question.” “Really?! Are you SURE?!” “How did that happen?” “Hey!” “What’s going on?” “Of course!”  We have also entered the “why” phase, which I had been dreading.  So far it hasn’t been TOO bad.
  3. Gross Motor: She has a new flamingo dance.
  4. Personality: We’ve always known that she likes to be independent but she’s definitely testing our patience this month.  There have been lots of moments when I know she heard what I asked her to do and she will selectively ignore it.  Sometimes she will just flat out say “no” and protest too.  At the same time, she is so sweet and caring most of the time.  When Mommy injures herself, she will console her and say “poor Mommy”.  She’s also very sweet to her stuffed animals.  I can also see the bossy side of her when she orders her stuffed animals and sometimes Mommy and Daddy around.  Her scowl and scolding face is a little frightening.  Poor Baby Brother is going to have to learn how to deal with his older sister.
  5. Stats: Size 7 shoes.  3T/4T clothes. Weight and height will be measured tomorrow at her doctor’s appointment.

DSC_6268

What a year (and month) it has been!  It’s sad to see the baby in her gradually disappear but we are so excited to see what else she will learn and accomplish this coming year.  She insists that she’s not a baby anymore and yet will still ask us to carry her at times.  Our little baby is now a full-fledged little kid now and we love her to pieces.  We are so proud of all that she has become and look forward to seeing how she handles being a big sister this coming year.

30 months

DSC_5636

Our Little Janie turned 30 months old today.  That’s two-and-a-half years old!!  Wow.

DSC_5649

Here are highlights from this past month:

  1. Lots of language: As usual, she’s a little chatterbox at home.  She says things like “thank you so much!”; “one second”; “uh…sure”; and “I need help!”   I can hear her imitating the things I say to her when she’s talking to Big GG.  “Go peepee in the potty.  Good job!” “Time to change your diaper.”
  2. Her Spanish is really coming out lately too: “Como estas? Bien?” (How are you? Good?); “se callo” (it fell); “Mira!” (look!); “mija” (my daughter).  She also labels so many things in Spanish all day.
  3. Counting: She is now able to count up to about 17 now.  Sometimes she skips a number here and there but I have heard her go straight up to 17 without help.
  4. Independence: It takes us twice as long to do everything now because she insists that “KK do it!” and then when she gets frustrated she refuses to get help.  We have been teaching her to ask for help instead of whining or getting really mad.
  5. Dressing: Janie now puts on her underwear, pants, socks, and some shoes on her own.  She can put the shirt over her head but finding the sleeves is still tricky.
  6. Hygiene and Grooming: Janie brushes her teeth and learned how to rinse and spit.  She also brushes her hair and washes her hands when she can reach everything on her own.
  7. Cups: She has gotten a lot better at drinking from an open cup without spilling.  We bought these colored cups at IKEA and she will say “no spill” when I hand her a cup of water or milk (filled only halfway).
  8. Potty training: She’s been accident-free most days with Mirian or at school.  We still put her in a diaper or pull-up at night and when we go out.
  9. Friends at school: After I pick her up from school, she will list some of the other kids at school.  I guess it’s sinking in now.  She’s still going 2 days per week (Wednesdays and Fridays).
  10. Sleeping: Janie has reverted back to her pack-n-play for most nights.  I don’t know why but it’s fine.  She can also climb in and out by herself where there is a step-stool nearby.
  11. New movie: The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh – she knows all the characters now.
  12. Health: Janie had her first visit to the ED this past month when she had croup.  Luckily she recovered very quickly and did not need any meds after she was sent home.
  13. Visual motor skills: Janie learned how to string beads big and small and quickly learned how to fold a square towel.
  14. Sharing: Janie has been a little better at sharing.  She went to a birthday party and shared with Isla and also had a playdate with Baby Henry and shared her banana.
  15. Gross motor: She’s starting to go up and down stairs reciprocally.  The tricycle is getting a lot easier lately and she is pedaling and steering like a pro.  We even took her outside on the sidewalk a few times.  She also helped Mommy finish her Miracle Marathon.  The biggest accomplishment of the month was learning how to pump a swing!! Woohoo!

This little girl amazes me every day.  She absorbs information faster than I can record her milestones.  She has a vocabulary that I can’t keep up with in 4 different languages.

Here highlights from this past month:

  1. Speech (English): here you go, thank you, I love you, dance, I don’t know, all done, ABC song, what’s that?, Alice (instead of “Alu”), ocean, milk, hello, tricycle, ah-choo!, chip, soup (instead of “boop”), hands, thumb, thank you
  2. Speech (Thai): milk, counting 1-10, water
  3. Speech (Spanish): milk, yes
  4. Concepts: She recognizes most of the numerals 1-9 and the letters O and U.
  5. Songs she can sing with a bit more clarity: ABCs, Do-Re-Mi, Happy Birthday, Twinkle Twinkle, Itsy Bitsy Spider, Wheels on the Bus, Cuckoo
  6. Gross motor: jumping with two feet, jumping off things with help, going down the slide (on her butt) all by herself, riding a scooter
  7. Self-care: Starting to pee in toilet. Telling us more frequently when she has to poop. Brushes her hair. Brushes her front teeth. Taking off her jacket on her own (including the zipper).  Washing/wiping her face and arms.
  8. Habits: Falling asleep and sometimes sleeping on sofa.  When she’s done drinking or eating something, she’ll say “all done ___” and then place it on the kitchen counter.  She will put away her toys before sitting down for a meal.

I can’t believe it’s been a year already.  Our Little Janie is now 12 months old.  Look at how she’s grown!!  It’s funny is that this was one of the easiest quilt photos I’ve taken in a very long time.  It was as if she knew it was her last one and I was able to get to to sit in the same spot as her first one.

She’s accomplished so much in her last month as a baby.  Here are some highlights:

  1. Janie started walking!!!
  2. She started signing “more” and “all done” and follows commands such as “clap” and “one”.
  3. She’s learned how to click her tongue.
  4. Janie got learned some new consonants like /g/, /w/, and /sh/
  5. She claps along with songs now and tries to say parts of familiar songs like “Twinkle Twinkle”.
  6. We took her to the zoo for the first time.
  7. Janie had more play dates with Sophie, Sadie, and Theo including a fancy brunch.
  8. Janie learned how to snuggle her toys and people.
  9. Peek-a-boo is still lots of fun and she initiates it more often now.
  10. She learned how to climb stairs at Auntie Ranee’s house.
  11. Janie has been going to the Children’s Creativity Museum and bringing home artwork.
  12. She’s eating more solids.
  13. We started her on whole milk the week before her birthday.
  14. Some new foods this month include: almond butter, wheat bread, pho noodles, blueberries, beans, and oatmeal.
  15. Met her Great Aunt Jim from Thailand and her new friend Isla who was born  couple weeks ago.
  16. Sleeps more consistently through the night and ranges from 9-11 hours.
  17. Rode on a plane and got her own seat.

Now that she has entered toddlerhood, it’s time to consider when to move to all whole milk, when to take the pacifier away, and when to start potty training.  Oh goody.

Happy Birthday, Baby Girl.  We love you!!

Janie is 11 months old today!!!  Woohoo!!  I don’t know what I was thinking when I decided to take a photo of Janie every month on a ROCKING CHAIR!!  This little ball of energy doesn’t know how to sit still anymore and it was too risky taking her monthly photo today without a second person around.  So, this photo will have to do.

rocking chair

Take a look at this outtake.  She was going to give me a heart attack this afternoon during our photoshoot.

smile

Our baby girl is quickly becoming a toddler and it’s so much fun but SO tiring now.  She’s definitely grown into her personality and I’m so worried about what’s in store for us.  She has a sense of humor, knows EXACTLY what she wants and lets us know, has an affectionate side that comes out occasionally, and still loves to eat.

Here are some highlights and stats from this past month:

  1. Janie has mastered crawling, cruising, and standing without support.  She’ll take a couple steps if I hold her hands.
  2. She can squat down while holding onto something with one hand in order to pick up something off the ground.  She also does a good kimchee squat without holding onto anything too.
  3. She has started drinking from her straw cup more consistently and taking a greater volume of fluids too.
  4. She can hold a bottle and drink from it as long as she’s reclined.  That bottle gets heavy!
  5. She’s saying “mummum” for when she wants to eat.  The other day I was eating something in front of her and she crawled over and said “mummum” all by herself.
  6. Janie went to Maui with her uncles and aunties for the first time.  She’s scared of waves but still enjoys the pool.
  7. New foods: garlic noodles, saimin, chicken/rice porridge, papaya, and orange slices.
  8. Learned how to clap and knows the word clap in English and Thai.
  9. Imitates sounds: ma-ma, da-da, no-no (she’s heard this a lot lately), and mum-mum. She’s also babbling soooo much more now with variable sounds including both consonant-vowel and vowel-consonant  combinations.  This girl wants to talk so badly.
  10. She cries out loud and/or hits my hand when I take something away from her.  This is something we’re still trying to fix.
  11. Still enjoys non-toy items over actual toys – especially remote controls and my mouse.  She’ll actually take my hand off the mouse and then grab it with her other hand.  So sneaky.
  12. She fought off another cold and got better before I did.  Sheesh.
  13. Sleeps 9-11 hours per night and uses G-raffe only in bed now.  *sniff sniff*
  14. She experienced two time changes jet lag to and from Hawaii as well as Daylight Saving Time.  Luckily it wasn’t too difficult for her.
  15. She now hates getting her diaper changed about 75% of the time and fights getting into the stroller about 50% of the time.
  16. Janie’s cheeks have slimmed down just enough for her left dimple to make a comeback this month.

remote

What a month it has been!  No wonder I’m so tired.  The countdown to turning ONE has officially begun.  I don’t know if I’ll be relieved or sad when she turns one next month.  I guess we’ll have to enjoy this time while it lasts.

Happy 11 Months, Little One!  We love you!
