Reach!

IMG_1247

Every afternoon when Mommy gets home, Janie takes her keys and tries to open all the doors.  She wasn’t able to reach the key fob sensor before and had to be picked up everyday.  Look who doesn’t need to be picked up anymore!!  Yay!

IMG_1248

She can also reach the elevator button now too!  They really do grow fast.

  11. Self-Care: put on Vans, starting to pull up pants, she doesn’t cry when we brush her teeth now, pouring water and playing with her tea set and spoons is still a favorite activity
  12. Janie grew tall enough to reach the fob sensor in the garage.  That also means we’ve had to retire some of her 12-18 month and 18-24 month clothes. She also grew new bottom molars.  We also moved up to Size 5 diapers.
  13. She’s been having night terrors this month.  She also had a cold this month.
  14. Janie is learning how to walk on the sidewalk with Mommy and Daddy and holding our hands is not her favorite.  So, we also use her backpack with tether sometimes.
  15. Both sets of grandparents came up to visit.
  16. DSC_4677Social: She’s loving Facetime with her cousin Alice and asks for her every night.  She’s also learned how to make a kissing sound.  Janie is also getting better with letting mommy go to work without crying.

Car Seat

IMG_0556

We finally upgraded to a big kid car seat and we installed it forward-facing too.  She’s tall enough and heavy enough so we thought, “why not?!”  We got this Britax Marathon G4 on Amazon when it was at a really good price ($207 instead of $289).  Janie got her first ride in the new seat today and she looks pretty comfy.  Suddenly, she looks small again too.  As we drove to Costco today, she got a whole new view from the center seat and through the front window!

IMG_0571

On our way home, she figured out that she could reach the back of Daddy’s seat with her foot.  Uh oh…I foresee a lot of kicking back there in our future.

Janie turned 22 months old today!  This month has been a month of language and new concepts.  It’s been really hard to keep up with all the new words that she’s learned.  Here are some highlights from this past month:

  1. New words in English: socks, bacon, red, blue, yellow, green, purple, snake, five, tea, fork, bowl, spoon, ow, fish, elephant, KK (her name), open, down, please, more, fish, what’s that, Mimi (Mirian), phone, bug, baba, all done, rice, thanks, see you later, owl, nose, mouth, head, arm, eye, ear, Mommy
  2. New words in Spanish: agua (she fixed it from “ah-wa-wa”), uno (1), dos (2), quatro (4), siete (7), ocho (8), nueve (9), fresa (strawberry), mas (more)
  3. New words in Mandarin: baba (daddy), mao (cat)
  4. She learned her basic colors: blue, red, orange, purple, green, yellow, black
  5. I was also surprised to see her labeling her body parts: nose, mouth, head, ears, eyes, arm, elbow.
  6. She has been singing a few songs now: do-re-me, hello song, cuckoo
  7. Things she can identify: tiger, elephant, numbers 1-9 (mostly 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9) on her toy laptop in English and Spanish
  8. We added a couple new videos to her line-up: Blue’s Clues (she loves the songs), Fun Fun Elmo (mandarin lessons)
  9. Gross motor: She loves walking on curbs, climbing onto table/chairs, using her step stool for everything, riding the moo cow and drifting, and using the laundry basket as a clubhouse.  She also has this funny way of leaning on someone in order to stand on one leg while crossing the other over her shin.
  10. This month’s favorites: playing with the toothpaste tube, containers, water play, having tea with her family and stuffed animals, playing with her stuffed animals, reading books with Dada.
  11. She has also learned how to match icons on her animal book.  She will look at the animal and then usually finds the correct matching button off to the right side.
  12. Fine motor: she makes a circular scribble sometimes, gotten very good at stirring and pouring, and rotates caps off of containers and tubes.
  13. Social: She gives hugs to her friends and Mommy and Daddy’s friends.  She’s also been calling everyone Uncle and Auntie – even the guy at the Trader Joe’s checkout stand.  She has also learned the concept of “Me” and will label herself “KK”.  She also give Dada a big hug and kiss every morning when he leaves for work.  She still cries when Mommy leaves in the morning.
  14. Self-care: Janie has figured out how to take off her jacket and socks, tries to pull her pants on/off, and tries to put on her shoes and socks.
  15. She went to the Oakland Zoo with her pals Sophie, Theo, and Sadie.  She also pet a goat for the first time and loved it.
  16. Tantrums are becoming more frequent but they don’t last very long.
  17. Weaning her from GG is progressing well.  The nipple on the pacifier has been cut in half and she will use it for a couple seconds at a time.  She’s been mostly using the giraffe for comfort, which is the whole point of this project.  Her teeth are already looking a little straighter!

21 months

DSC_4361

Another quarter has gone by and Janie is now 21 months old today.  This month was full of new accomplishments and quirks.

  1. Janie went on her first cruise and it was to Ensenada.  She had a wonderful time with Ama and Ankong.
  2. She also made her 2nd trip to Disneyland and went on the Dumbo ride.
  3. Janie also celebrated her 2nd Christmas and 2nd New Year’s Eve.  She stayed up until 9pm (East Coast midnight) with Alice over FaceTime.
  4. She learned some new words that she can say: mine, empty, pizza (thanks to Daddy), bravo, Andrew, this, that, bubble, Amen, amo (love), da (give), me, Mia (Mirian), spoon, fork, here you go, thank you, sheh-sheh (thank you in Mandarin), stop, go, bus.
  5. She understands quite a bit now and I can send her to give something to Daddy, put something away, or retrieve something for me.  She’ll sit down when asked and really understands “no”.
  6. Here are some Spanish words that she understands: frio (cold), nariz (nose), mano (hand), boca (mouth), cabeza (head), cinco (five), uno (one).  There’s a bunch more but it’s been too hard to keep track.
  7. Janie has started putting two simple words together.  She often pairs “Mama” with something she wants like “Mama toto” (translation: Mama I want tomato.)  She will also put “no” in front of something like “no poopoo”.
  8. She has a better understanding of herself now.  When she does roll call, she will also point to herself but she just can’t quite say her name yet…any of her names actually.  We’ve tried to make up a short nickname for her and she just refuses.  She’s also found her bellybutton.
  9. Her hands are doing some cool things.  She can make an “ok” with her thumb and index finger, she likes to give “thumbs up” (especially when you say “love you!”), and she can isolate her pinkie finger.  One day she even made a Shaka (hang loose).
  10. She’s eating a huge variety of foods but still loves milk.  She started eating banana this past month thanks to Yai over Christmas Break.  It’s still not a favorite but she’ll actually eat half a banana in one sitting.  She also had corn-on-the-cob for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it.  We’ve also introduced watered-down juice, which helps her intake of fluids and keeps her regular.  Current Weight: 27.6 pounds.  She’s also wearing clothes in 18-24 months or 2T.  Her Size 5 shoes have also been retired.
  11. Fine motor skills are coming along nicely: she can open presents by ripping paper, pour water from one container to another (her favorite thing to do this month), remove the cap off a marker, brush her hair and her GG too, and she found her pockets!
  12. Visual motor skills are also progressing: she is a pro at the simple puzzles we have, likes to put shapes in the shape sorter, still enjoys scribbling, and stacks cubes so nicely now.DSC_4373
  13. Gross motor skills: climbing onto the dining chair or sofa or bench outside, ascending and descending stairs with the rail and sometimes without anything at all (scary), scoots around on her Moo Cow on wheels, rides the horse at the playground by herself.
  14. Behaviors: She has developed a weird giggle.  It’s cute but creepy at the same time.  When she is protesting or tired or bored, she will lie on the ground (we call it “Potato Time”).  She is also becoming more and more willful but it’s been manageable.  Alone time in her bed still seems to help.  Janie is also still very attached to Mama – not sure if there’s an end in sight.
  15. Janie still loves music and songs are becoming more meaningful.  She will do all the gestures for “Twinkle Twinkle”, “Wheels on the Bus”, and “Head Shoulders Knees and Toes”.  She’ll also pick up words like “shake”, “side-to-side”, and “around” in songs she doesn’t know and act them out.  She also tries to sing “E-I-E-I-O”.
  16. DSC_4358She’s so affectionate to animals and stuff toys.  She will go up to any dog at the park with absolutely no fear.  She will also snuggle her stuffed toys and use their hands/paws to clap.  She also pets them on the head, gives them the pacifier or straw to drink, and combs them.
  17. Books are more interesting to her now and she will label things she recognizes.  We also got her an alphabet placemat with corresponding animals to the letters and it really keeps her entertained at restaurants.  I still love her pretend-reading voice and intonations.
  18. Outings are more fun now because Janie will recognize and point out the buses, trains, and cars that zoom by.  She can reach the pedals on the tricycle now too.  She also rode Muni and BART lots of times this past month and has been taking the escalators and stairs like a big kid.  Holding someone’s hand and walking on the sidewalk is also more efficient.
  19. Favorites: playing with water, GG, Baby Einstein (seasons and on-the-go), and riding Moo Cow.
  20. Lastly, we’ve started GG weaning.  The first step was cutting slits into the pacifier to make it less satisfying to suck.  She still asks for it but I don’t find it in her mouth nearly as much anymore.

DSC_4369

Does it seem like the monthly list gets longer and longer?  It just goes to show how much she learns day by day.  It’s hard to keep track of everything!  As difficult it is at times, having a toddler is actually pretty fun and exciting.  I love seeing the world through her eyes and appreciating everyday things again in a new way.

20 months

DSC_4074

Janie is 20 months old today and this month has really flown by!

DSC_4075

Here are some highlights from this past month:

  1. This month was filled with lots of language.  She says her own version of Alice (alu), lights (ight), ga-ga (duck), car (caw), the end (en!), cookie/cucumber (koo-ka), snack (nah), tomato (to-to), and soup (boop).  She is also able to actually say juice, hi, bye, tractor, stop, cheese! (for pictures), neh-neh (our family word for sleep), mano (hand in Spanish), and I go.
  2. She’s also identifying things like flower, cow, sheep, and orange (the fruit).
  3. Her comprehension is pretty amazing to us too.  I can tell her to give something to Dada or to throw something in the trashcan, and she does it!
  4. Signs are still useful to her.  She shows me the Wheels on the Bus gesture for that video now.  She’s also waving bye and hi to people more consistently.
  5. Baby Rhyme Time is getting more exciting for her and she’s learned lots of new songs like “Peek-a-Boo”, “Hello Song”, “Head Shoulders Knees and Toes” and of course “Wheels on the Bus”.  Mirian says she also gets excited to receive her sticker at the end of storytime.  She’ll actually stand and stick out her chest for the lady to place it on her shirt.
  6. When she has FaceTime with Yai and Ta, she will greet them with a proper “Sawasdee Ka” greeting.
  7. She can identify a few more body parts: shoulders, arm, toes, and cheek.
  8. Eating is still a favorite pasttime and she’s really been into scooping and slurping soup.  Her spoon- and fork-use have also really improved.
  9. Dancing consists of spinning, hip swaying, and clapping.  She also learned a new kunfu move and will lift a leg and say “hi-ya!”
  10. We’ve experienced a growth spurt this past month too.  She was getting up in the middle of the night looking really uncomfortable and plowed through more milk than usual this past month.  I haven’t measured her but her pants are looking pretty short lately.
  11. Fine motor skills have blossomed to my delight.  She’s stacking cubes of all sizes, placing animals into the correct places in a puzzle, and uses her left hand (helper hand) to hold the paper while she colors with the right hand.  She also learned how to split her pretend fruits with a plastic knife and sorts shapes through their appropriate slots.
  12. We celebrated Thanksgiving with Uncle Johnny, Auntie Joy, Alice, Yai, and Ta this year and she’s now calling out “Uncle!” and “Auntie!” when she sees them.   She took a special interest in Alice and says “Alu” when she sees her on FaceTime or in a photo.  She also looks to see what’s going on when she hears a random newborn baby crying in stores.
  13. The Christmas season was also celebrated this month and she enjoyed hanging ornaments on the tree.  She’s also shown interest in the lights on the tree. and had a holiday party with all her little buddies this past month.
  14. We continued taking her to the SF Zoo and this month she saw real life giraffes up-close and she pointed to them and said “GG!!”
  15. She’s going through a big attachment phase to her mama this month.  She notices even when she leaves to use the bathroom and bangs on the door yelling “MAMA!”

What a fun month!  This little girl is such a sponge and imitates everything we do and say now.  Happy 20 Months, Kumquat!

18-month Check-up

IMG_6360

Janie went to see Dr. Kaplan again today for a check-up.

IMG_6361

She really likes the waiting room and lucky for her we got there early enough to allow her time to play.

IMG_6362

IMG_6364

The exam room is also just as fun.

IMG_6367

They have a box of toys and books but Janie prefers to play with all the furniture.

IMG_6368

Here are the stats:

Weight: 25 lbs, 5 ounces (66th percentile)

Height: 31.75 inches (53rd percentile)

All systems checked out well and our little girl is growing just the right rate.  The only bummer about the visit was the end – two shots in the left thigh. Ouch.

IMG_6371

She was so mad throughout the whole thing and as we were getting her dressed afterward, she noticed the bandaids and started to cry again.

Hoowee!  Look who’s 18 months old!  That’s a year and a half!  Where is the time going?  Well, I thought that I’d take a photo of our big girl in the chair with the quilt for this milestone and this is the best photo I could get.  Here’s a recap of this past month:

  1. She’s discovered slides and also thinks it’s fun to try to climb up them.
  2. New words: ba (bath), e-i-e-i-o (is that a word?), up, Ama, cheese, ball, ga-go (Legos)
  3. Janie can identify her teeth and hands.
  4. She understands the following commands: “la boca” (mouth in Spanish), “put it back”, “smell the flower”, “wash your hands”, and “wipe your face”.
  5. She started playing with actual Legos (thanks for the stash, Uncle Johnny).
  6. Janie flew on the plane again – this time to Southern California.
  7. She knows how to get off the couch safely.
  8. She’s pointing to things and labeling “GoGo” (dog), “apple”, and “nai-nai” (milk).  She’ll also point to things and say “this” – well, it sounds more like “dis”.
  9. She’s totally into dipping her food in sauces and actually eats the item that is getting dipped too.
  10. New foods: celery, raw carrot sticks, spinach, arugula, olives, garbanzo beans, tomato, quesadilla, salsa, sour cream, ketchup, other sauces, mandarin orange (thanks Sophie), Lawry’s prime rib, and spicy foods.
  11. She is doing more pretend play and will try to feed a baby a bottle, push the shopping cart, and sweep the floor.
  12. She also got to go to California Academy of Sciences and SF Zoo again this past month.
  13. One other significant event for this month (and actual day that she turned 18 months) was saying goodbye to her pal “GoGo”.  She doesn’t really understand what’s happened but she certainly has not forgotten him.

Janie is growing way too fast for my taste but there’s not stopping.  She’s so much fun to hang out with now but keeping her out of trouble can also be frustrating.  We’re also at a point now where we really have to take GG away.  It’s gonna be hard on all of us but we’re giving ourselves until her 24th month to accomplish our goal.  Wish us luck!

Happy 18 months, Little Girl.  Mama, Dada, and GoGo love you to pieces.

There goes another month!  Sheesh…this girl just keeps growing and changing before our very eyes.  She’s 17 months old today!  Here are some highlights from this past month:

  1. She’s obsessed with stairs and just wants to go up and down over and over again.  Unfortunately for us, she still needs someone to hold her hand so that means we get quite a workout too.
  2. Language has really blossomed this month.  She says following words now: gracias (thank you in Spanish), no, go-go (doggie in Mandarin – it’s also pretty close to saying Koa too), mama, dada, cheese, parque (park in Spanish), Yai (grandma in Thai), Ta (grandpa in Thai), and uncle.  She’s also learned the sign for “fish”.  She already knows how to say apple but now she will label it.  Whenever she sees an apple, she’ll point and proudly yell “apple!”
  3. Janie’s really into shrugging her shoulders and moving her eyebrows up and down to people.  She also pretends to wash her hands, face, and hair.  She also likes to play with a lotion bottle by pretending to put some in her hand and then rub her hands and face.  She also likes to sling a bag over her shoulder and put a phone to her ear.  Hilarious.
  4. Her new dance move is to spin in circles.
  5. Janie is very proud of the fact that she can buckle the straps on her feeder seat and has been working on buckling the straps on her stroller and on Mirian’s double stroller too.  I’m just glad she doesn’t know how to unbuckle yet.
  6. She’s able to identify her eyes, nose, mouth, ears, head, tummy (of course!), and feet.
  7. Janie ran in her very first race at Disneyland.  It was hot, crowded, and only 100 meters but she finished and received a medal!
  8. Ankong and Ama took her to the Long Beach Aquarium for the first time.
  9. Janie is able to scoop yogurt or oatmeal with a spoon and most of it actually makes it into her mouth.  She’s also really gotten into dipping her food into sauces, dips, and anything else that comes in a little container.
  10. She’s also grown into Size 5 shoes so we got her a bunch of new kicks this past month.
  11. The biggest milestone this month is transitioning from a bottle to a straw cup for her milk.  It was much easier than I expected.  Now if only we could figure out how to get her off the pacifier.
  12. Janie’s also figured out how to use a cool training cup that teaches her how to take sips from an open cup.
  13. Janie had her first visit to the dentist and got a cool toothbrush.
  14. Mirian also bought her a pair of sunglasses and she actually keeps them on her face and head.

IMG_0018

IMG_0020

One more thing!  She’s learned how to do the Thai greeting with her fingers straightened out.  For the longest time, she was curling her fingers in.  When she’s in the mood, she’ll even bring her hands toward her nose like she’s supposed to.

IMG_0021

And of course, we’ve gotta have Senor Fatty Duck Duck in one of these photos.

IMG_0017

What a month it has been!  Happy 17 months, Kumquat!

Oh boy. Where did this past month go?! This kid is definitely keeping me on my toes.

Here are some highlights:

  • She likes to point things out and makes a sound that sort of sounds like “that”.
  • She says apple, agua, and GG (for G-raffe, of course)
  • When I hand her G-raffe, she gives him a big hug first.
  • We started letting her watch Baby Einstein videos and she loves them…especially the Old MacDonald one.
  • Janie has been signing “more” whens he wants something to eat, nodding “no” A LOT, signing “open” when she wants a toy container opened, and puts her hands up when she wants to be picked up.
  • She’s consistently touching her head, nose, mouth, and tummy when you ask her. She’s also learning feet and ears.
  • Janie likes to squat and pat her knees.
  • Scooping with a spoon is getting easier.
  • She is obsessed with climbing stairs and mastered climbing into her stroller.
  • Janie loves to back up and sit down on steps, people, dogs, stuffed animals, and anything else she can reach with her butt.
  • When I come home from work, she will get super excited to see me in my car. She also waves, gives a high-give, and blows kisses to Mirian and Karla.
  • Janie had her first blood draw and HATED it.
  • She’s learned how to quietly protest by going limp and lying down on the floor. Unfortunately, she still knows how to cry too when she gets something taken away from her.
  • Janie is stacking blocks, putting together pop beads, and putting Duplos together like a champ.
  • She’s also learned how to clink her cup with someone else’s cup.

So much has happened and there’s so much more to come! Love you, Baby Girl!
