33 months

IMG_1969

Janie turned 33 months old today and she’s just 3 months away from turning 3.  Crazy.  This was the only photo I could get of her with Ducky.  You would like she would get more cooperative as she gets older but that’s not the case.

This month has been filled with language, funny sayings, and lots of holiday fun.  Here’s a recap:

  1. Language: “I don’t like ___.” “Just a little bit” “NO NO NO NEVER!” “Do you like this song?” “It’s not Christmas anymore.” “I’m not a baby.  I’m a big girl.”  “I’m not a bear.  I’m a monkey.”
  2. This month’s songs and books: Muffin Man, Slippery Fish, Press Here, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, “Buenos Dias”
  3. Travel: Janie flew to Puerto Vallarta and used her passport for the first time. She loved playing in the pool and in the sand.
  4. Disneyland: This was the best year yet because she recognized characters and enjoyed most of the rides.
  5. Christmas: Janie got a bunch of presents and had a good time unwrapping them all.
  6. Favorites: straws, tea party and “swimming” in the bathtub, playing in the pool, “painting” in her new book.
  7. Fine Motor: Janie learned how to use scissors and loved it.
  8. New foods: almonds, dried cranberries, and raisins. These were her “special treats” for the plane ride to Mexico.
  9. Gross Motor: Janie likes slides and braved some really tall tube slides this month.  She’s also getting much more comfortable in the pool and will walk around in the shallow areas with the water up to her chin.
  10. Chores: putting her dirty clothes in the hamper, putting her shoes away, folding dish towels, feeding the fish with Daddy, watering the plants, putting toys and clean clothes away.

What a fun and eventful month!  Happy 33 Months, Big Girl!

We’ve got a short list this month but she’s gone through some major milestones at the same time.

  1. This month, Mirian had her last day and Janie started Full-time Daycare on December 1st.
  2. She also got her very own bed and loves it.
  3. Counting: Janie has learned how to count to 20 in English and Spanish.
  4. Visual Motor: She learned how to draw a face and rectangle.
  5. Health: Fever for 3 days and home with Daddy
  6. Funny sayings: “Yups.” “I don’t like that.” “I’m awake!”
  7. Language: She’s getting better with I, you, me, yours, mine.  She still needs work with identifying gender and she always mixes up he and she.
  8. Reading: She still loves her books and I love hearing her recite her favorite books.  I’m amazed at her memory.
  9. Weather: We’ve had a pretty rainy month and Janie loved splashing in the puddles and hanging out with an umbrella outside!
  10. Christmas music: We’ve been listening to Christmas music since Thanksgiving and her favorite song is “Sleigh Ride”, which she calls “horse song”.
  11. Visitors: Yai and Ta came up to visit.  G. Auntie Jeanie also came up for a weekend.
  12. Birthday parties: Went to two birthday parties and learned how to really jump inside a bounce house.

Happy 32 Months, Kiddo!  We’re amazed at how much you comprehend, remember, and say.  You’re picking up new concepts so fast that we can’t keep up!  Love you, KK!

Stroller Fun

IMG_9128

This afternoon at the park, the girls hung out together with their matching strollers.  Mirian sent me a few photos and Janie looked mad in all of them.  I texted her back and said “She looks so mad.”  A couple minutes later, Mirian replied “She look mad all day.”  Haha.  Here’s a video of them.  I think she’s not actually mad – just has a scowl on her face at rest…like her Dad. 🙂

DSC_5636

Our Little Janie turned 30 months old today.  That’s two-and-a-half years old!!  Wow.

DSC_5649

Here are highlights from this past month:

  1. Lots of language: As usual, she’s a little chatterbox at home.  She says things like “thank you so much!”; “one second”; “uh…sure”; and “I need help!”   I can hear her imitating the things I say to her when she’s talking to Big GG.  “Go peepee in the potty.  Good job!” “Time to change your diaper.”
  2. Her Spanish is really coming out lately too: “Como estas? Bien?” (How are you? Good?); “se callo” (it fell); “Mira!” (look!); “mija” (my daughter).  She also labels so many things in Spanish all day.
  3. Counting: She is now able to count up to about 17 now.  Sometimes she skips a number here and there but I have heard her go straight up to 17 without help.
  4. Independence: It takes us twice as long to do everything now because she insists that “KK do it!” and then when she gets frustrated she refuses to get help.  We have been teaching her to ask for help instead of whining or getting really mad.
  5. Dressing: Janie now puts on her underwear, pants, socks, and some shoes on her own.  She can put the shirt over her head but finding the sleeves is still tricky.
  6. Hygiene and Grooming: Janie brushes her teeth and learned how to rinse and spit.  She also brushes her hair and washes her hands when she can reach everything on her own.
  7. Cups: She has gotten a lot better at drinking from an open cup without spilling.  We bought these colored cups at IKEA and she will say “no spill” when I hand her a cup of water or milk (filled only halfway).
  8. Potty training: She’s been accident-free most days with Mirian or at school.  We still put her in a diaper or pull-up at night and when we go out.
  9. Friends at school: After I pick her up from school, she will list some of the other kids at school.  I guess it’s sinking in now.  She’s still going 2 days per week (Wednesdays and Fridays).
  10. Sleeping: Janie has reverted back to her pack-n-play for most nights.  I don’t know why but it’s fine.  She can also climb in and out by herself where there is a step-stool nearby.
  11. New movie: The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh – she knows all the characters now.
  12. Health: Janie had her first visit to the ED this past month when she had croup.  Luckily she recovered very quickly and did not need any meds after she was sent home.
  13. Visual motor skills: Janie learned how to string beads big and small and quickly learned how to fold a square towel.
  14. Sharing: Janie has been a little better at sharing.  She went to a birthday party and shared with Isla and also had a playdate with Baby Henry and shared her banana.
  15. Gross motor: She’s starting to go up and down stairs reciprocally.  The tricycle is getting a lot easier lately and she is pedaling and steering like a pro.  We even took her outside on the sidewalk a few times.  She also helped Mommy finish her Miracle Marathon.  The biggest accomplishment of the month was learning how to pump a swing!! Woohoo!

What a fun month!  Happy Half-Birthday, KK!!  We love you to pieces.

30-month visit

IMG_9086

Janie went to see the doctor today for her 30-month check-up.  What’s interesting is that she cried when it came time to weigh and measure her. She didn’t even let me take her shirt off.

IMG_9089

She made such a fuss that I didn’t have time to write down her stats.  I’m gonna have to call them tomorrow to get the numbers but I think this is what the nurse said:

Weight: 30 lbs, 4 oz.
Height: 35.25 inches

IMG_9090

Luckily the crying didn’t last long and the books and toys in the exam room helped.  When the doctor came in, she was really quiet and a little worried.  To break the ice, she received a lollipop just like last time.  Everything checked out well but she refused to talk so the doctor wrote in her notes “reportedly talks”.  Haha.

IMG_9095

The last part was to get her flu shot and she didn’t even flinch this time.  She was more excited about the bandaid on her leg and the lollipop she had to finish.

Janie turned 29 months today and what a month it has been!

DSC_5602

DSC_5607

I took these photos while we were on our Saturday morning outing.  My little baby is turning into quite the little girl.  Here are some highlights from this past month:

  1. POTTY TRAINING!!! We are now in underwear or pull-ups during the day (including at school) with very few accidents.  She even gave it a try at Yai and Ta’s house without much of a problem.  The stickers are still a powerful reward but totally unnecessary at this point.  I think it took about one weekend for her to get the hang of it.  This coming month we’ll have to take a leap and go on an outing in underwear.  Yikes.
  2. Dressing: Janie is able to put on and take off her underwear and pants all on her own.  This definitely helped with the potty training.
  3. GG: He no longer has a pacifier (fell off at the beginning of her 29th month) and Janie is doing great without it.  She still loves GG and plays with his ears to help fall asleep.
  4. No more tears at school! That’s right…we’re on a little roll right now with 3 days in a row without tears at drop-off.  She always looks like she’s on the verge but somehow she pulls it together when Mommy leaves for work.
  5. Spanish: This kid is pulling Spanish out of her little brain spontaneously now with me.  She’s also labeling what she says by saying, “Mama, Spanish” just in case I wasn’t understanding her.  Her vocabulary is increasing each time she goes to school.  They go over fruits, vegetables, colors, the alphabet, and many more things that I won’t be able to do with her – all in Spanish.  This is great!
  6. Riding the tricycle: Janie figured out how to pedal and steer her tricycle this month and now does laps around the house.
  7. Fine Motor: Janie learned how to string large beads.  She is also getting better with coloring inside of lines on a picture.  Her grasp is looking pretty good too.
  8. Sharing: This is getting much better – even with Alice.
  9. Another ride on a plane: We went down to Southern California for a weekend so that Mommy and Daddy could attend a wedding.
  10. Sleep-over: Janie stayed overnight at Yai and Ta’s house without Mommy and Daddy for the first time and it was a success!
  11. Ama and Ankong came up to visit us!  They were here just in time to celebrate Daddy’s birthday too.
  12. Daddy’s birthday: Janie helped sing “Happy Birthday” and blow out the candle.
  13. Sleeping in the pack-n-play again: I don’t know what happened but she’s back in there again and no longer on the sofa.  Weird but totally cool with us.
  14. Thai: She spontaneously said “thank you” in Thai to Mommy one day.
  15. New foods: lamb and figs.
  16. Favorite things: Cooking/Tea Parties, Sesame Street, GG, Big GG, Tricycle, turning off the lights, jumping off things, and doing everything herself.
  17. Stats (approximate):

Weight 29 pounds.  Height 35.5 inches. Shoes Size 6/7. Clothes 2T/3T. Diapers Size 5/6.

28 months

IMG_7303

Janie turned 28 months today and it has been a big month of changes.  The most significant change is that that she started Day Care 2 days per week.  Although it has been hard on both Janie and Mommy, the change is good and commuting with her has been nice.  Another change is that she has become a full-fledged toddler with lots of strong opinions and wants to do everything on her own. She started to fight bedtime and makes up every excuse in the book to stay up longer.  Just the other night, she stood in her bed and screamed “POOPOO IN THE TOILET!!” over and over and over again.  She finally settled down on her own after 45 minutes of protesting.  We also foresee some struggles with GG being detached from the pacifier.  It fell off today and although the nipple has been cut down all the way, she still looks for the green part that remains.  We will see how the next few nights go without it.

IMG_7304

Here are some other things that happened this past month:

  1. New phrases: I don’t want it. KK do it! Mama go work.  KK go to school.  Better?  I’m scared! Where are you? Good morning! What are you doing?
  2. In Spanish, she learned all her colors and I think she’s able to understand the teacher’s Spanish even with her being from Peru.  Mirian is from El Salvador and apparently Spanish around the world varies a bit.
  3. Self-care: Janie can put on pants by herself now.  She’s also working on getting toilet trained at school.  The other day, the teacher kept her out of diapers all day and Janie had only one accident!  I think we’re gonna go shopping for underwear this weekend.
  4. Gross motor: Janie still loves to climb and jump off of things.  Her biggest accomplishment was learning how to pedal her tricycle.  Now if she would figure out how to steer.  She’s also getting a little better at catching and kicking a ball.
  5. Fine motor: Janie can now sign the ABCs on her own.  She’s most proud of her ability to make Y with her fingers.
  6. Concepts: She learned about sharing and how to share.  She still doesn’t like it but she’ s gotten better since her trip to Monterey where she had a hard time sharing her toys with Alice.  Janie has also has a better understanding of Mommy and Daddy going to work and that they come back at the end of the day.  I can hear her rehearsing “KK go school.  Mama go work.”
  7. Pretend play: Janie imitates and rehearses everything.  I often hear my words and tone of voice coming out of her when she’s playing and reenacting things with Big GG.  She helps him go poopoo on the toilet, helps him jump off the curb, and she pointed out the rain to him at the window.  She’ll even yell “NO” in the same way I do when she’s about to do something she’s not supposed to.
  8. Emotions: She has been telling us when she’s happy, mad, or scared.  In Monterey, the whole family was watching Despicable Me 2 and she got scared of the purple minions.  She clung onto Auntie Jia and said “Scared!!”
  9. Reading: Daddy taught Janie how to spell her name and she’s recognizing upper and lowercase letters all around her with increasing speed.
  10. Counting: Janie is learning 11-20 but she kind of makes it up as she goes along.
  11. Big Trips: Monterey and Lake Tahoe.  She went to the beach during both trips and got really comfortable play at the beach by the end of our Tahoe trip.
  12. Her shoe size is still between 6 and 7 but we recently retired our favorite black Vans with the cherries on them.  Those were the best hand-me-downs ever.
  13. The biggest thing that we’re dealing with now is our ever-increasingly-independent toddler.  She expresses her opinions loudly and wants to do everything herself.  Her stubborn streak has really emerged this past month.

Luckily, this kid is super cute and has enough charm to get us through the tough times.  Happy 24 28 months, Big Girl!!

DSC_4925

Janie is 26 months old today!  She’s quickly turning into a little kid with so much to say.

DSC_4932

Here’s what’s happened over the past month:

  1. Lots of phrases and words in English: in the bed, running, sleeping, eating, sit down, it hurts, tissue, mad, tv, where are you?, what are you doing?, friends, on the floor, outside, scooter, stroller, Bao be, Nina, Jesse, Noi, Yim, draw a picture, markers, crayons, tea party, too heavy, too tight, it’s hot in here, tired, hungry, open the door, it’s hot in here, __ too (when she wants two different things), I don’t know, are you ok?, owie, reading a book, zoo, Sophie, Baby Vivian.
  2. Her favorite phrase in Thai this month is: dee mak (very good), law deo (wait a moment).
  3. She also learned a bunch of Mandarin with Ankong this past month.  Understands that her name is also “bao be”.  Some other phrases: tastes good, drink water, and eat.
  4. She apparently speaks to Mirian in Spanish but the only new words I’ve heard this month are por favor (thank you) and aqui (here).
  5. New behaviors: pouting in bed, learning to wait, she’s gotten increasingly attached to her stuffed toys, learning to deal with Mommy leaving for work, saying “cheese” for pictures.  We’ve noticed that Janie has been able to anticipate things now.  When we drove down to Southern California, she kept talking about all the people she was going to see.  When we’re on our way to the zoo, she’ll list all the animals she’s going to see.  She will also tell us when she’s ready to get going.  For example, if she’s all buckled in the stroller but Mommy’s taking too long to get going, she will say, “Mama, Vamanos! Outside!”  She’s also letting us know how she wants to go outside.  It’s either “stroller”, “walking”, or “hold hands”.  By the way, holding hands out on the sidewalk and parking garage is much easier now.
  6. Janie is definitely becoming a more independent little toddler who gets wrapped up in her play and has quite a stubborn streak.  She’s less willing to put down her toys to greet Yai and Ta and when it’s time to say goodbye and she’s not ready, she’ll say “NO BYE! HI!”
  7. She’s learning about emotions and has been telling us when she’s mad.  She also understands happy too.
  8. She’s been singing lots of songs: Do Re Me, Peek-a-Boo, Itsy-Bitsy Spider, Let It Go, Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?
  9. One of her favorite things to do is have tea parties with her stuffed animals and any other people who are willing to sit with her.  She even has virtual tea parties with cousin Alice and her grandparents over FaceTime.
  10. She also now uses a toy ruler as a camera, puts it up to her eye, and says “cheese!”  She has managed to figure out how to do it for real with her iPad as well.
  11. Her first Disney movie was Cinderella a few months ago but I think the first Disney movie that has made an impression on her is Frozen.  She recognizes Elsa, Ana, and Olaf and sings along to some of the songs.
  12. She also started watching “So You Think You Can Dance” with Mommy and loves to watch the dancers on tv.
  13. Her biggest gross motor accomplishment this month is mastering her birthday scooter.  She’s able to go straight, follow a path, and stop on her own.
  14. She still loves to draw and color and this month she has expanded her drawings.  On top of her usual circles, she makes squiggly lines, horizontal strokes, and vertical strokes.  She also labeled her first pictures, which she called “Ocean”.
  15. We’ve been working on pulling up her pants, taking off shoes and socks, and putting on a shirt.  She also helps wash herself in the bath and has been pooping on the toilet more consistently.  We started a new routine before bed, which involves sitting on the toilet to try to poop before putting on her sleeping diaper and pajamas.  It actually works too!
  16. She’s in between Size 5 and 6 diapers and in between Size 6 and 7 shoes.  We haven’t measured her lately but she’s quickly outgrowing some of her 2T pants.
  17. Her first chore is cleaning up her toys.  She will usually put her toys away when I ask her to.  She’s also learning that she needs to put one toy away before opening another one.
  18. This month she learned some simple shapes: circle triangle, square, heart, diamond.
  19. She also recognizes all her capital letters and some lowercase letters.
  20. Reading is still fun and she is now reciting her favorite books to her stuffed animals.  Her favorites right now are Dear Zoo, I Love You Through and Through, That’s Not My Dinosaur, and Brown Bear.
  21. She now looks forward to seeing her pals Sophie and Vivian.  She also met Baby Henry who will soon be able to speak to her in Spanish.
  22. Counting is still a big hit for her and she counts everything now.  She’s also trying to count to 20 in English.
  23. Janie also attended her first funeral.  It was for her Great Grandmother and she was so well-behaved that day.  The trip down to Southern California was nice and she loved seeing her grandparents, uncles, aunties, and cousin Alice.

It’s amazing how much she learns in such a short amount of time.  Happy 26 month, KK!  We love you!

It seems like the amount of stuff she’s learning is at an exponential rate.  Over the past month, she has picked up so many new skills that I’ve almost given up trying to keep track.  Here are some highlights of her first month as a two-year-old:

  1. She went to Hawaii for the third time and conquered her fear of Mr. Ocean.  She had so much fun this time around and it was extra special having her pals Andrew and Keenan around too.
  2. Reading and Counting: She recognizes and labels all the letters (uppercase) of the alphabet with the exception of H, I, J, L, and V.  She’s also recognizing some lowercase letters but I haven’t tested her.  She’s also understanding the concept of 1-to-1 correspondence and counting objects.  Her favorite thing to do is count her crayons when she’s coloring.
  3. English: In Hawaii, she said her first complete sentence: “I want GG.”  Now she’s saying “I want___.” all the time.  She also said “Thank you Mama.” and it just melted my heart.  Other common words she’ll say are: bib, pillow, blanket, Big GG, animals, crayons, outside, scooter, tricycle, and many more than I can’t remember.
  4. Spanish: Vamanos (Let’s go).  Her understanding of Spanish is also beyond my comprehension.  Tia Patty tested it out last weekend and confirmed my hunch.  Mirian also taught her that if you ask her “Cuantos anos tienes?” (How old are you?) She’ll answer “dos” (two).  If you ask the same question in English, you just get a confused look back.
  5. We’re starting to have small conversations with her.  One day I asked, “What does Mama say?” and she replied, “No.”  Then when I asked “What does Dada say?”  She said, “Up.”  Funny girl.
  6. People: Instead of calling people uncle and auntie, she’s beginning to say their names too.  This all started with labeling Uncle Dayantha, then she picked up Uncle Jason, Auntie Joy, Auntie Jia, and Uncle Johnny.  She’s also naming her pals Andrew and Keenan when she sees them.  The other day she also said Vivian.
  7. Gross motor: She went on a waterslide for the first time this month.  She also received a scooter for her birthday and can really get going if she has enough space to go in circles.  She hasn’t quite mastered steering or going straight yet but she can really make a mean counter-clockwise circle.  Janie has also learned how to jump off a small step and gets some clearance off the ground now.  She is also much better with holding our hands out on the street lately.  Taking her on the train has been a little easier now too.
  8. Fine motor: I was amazed when I saw her cutting her food with the side of her fork the other day.  She has pretty much mastered drawing a circle and stops without a continuous scribble around and around (when she’s in the mood).  If you draw a big circle, she will scribble what are supposed to be eyes, a nose, mouth, two ears, and hair.
  9. Habits: Janie now officially sleeps on the sofa bed out in the livingroom every night.  So far, she’s fallen off only once and it was when she was coughing and confused in the dark.  Otherwise, she hardly moves all night.
  10. This past month, we also learned that Mirian is expecting her second baby in December.  So, we have the rest of the year to find new childcare for Janie.  Will it be a new nanny or daycare??  We don’t know yet but we’ll keep you posted.

DSC_4840

What an awesome month.  Our little toddler is a real kid now and it’s so much fun seeing the world through her eyes.  Happy 25 months, KK!!  Love you.

24-month visit

Janie went to see the doctor today. We took public transportation there for the fun of it. Janie really enjoyed riding the train, watching them go by as we waited for our next train, and looking out the window.

IMG_2564

IMG_2563

IMG_2566

When we got there, the nurse took us to a room first instead of going straight to the scale.

IMG_2567

Now that she’s older and bigger, we undressed her in the exam room and she walked herself into the exam room for the weighing and measuring.

IMG_2568

She barely fits the scale platform now.

Here are the stats:

Weight:  28 lbs 6 oz. (73rd percentile)

Height: 34.25 inches (66th percentile)

IMG_2569

The doctor was impressed by her growth and said she looked great.

IMG_2570

Janie was a little timid around the doctor but warmed up quickly when she received her very first lollipop.  Dr. Kaplan told her that only big kids get lollipops. That girl demolished it while the doc was doing her examination.  I can’t believe she’s a full-fledged kid now.

IMG_2574

Here she is waiting for the train on our way back.  She lucked out on not getting any shots today but she’ll be getting one next Wednesday when we get back from our trip.
